5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

So I am sorry about the delay writing this. I almost was going to buy some eggs in time to set the 11th but then realized that my band account was over-drafted :-(

But miraculously a friend gave me some of her silkie eggs our of her fridge i set them on the 13th. I candled yesterday and it looks like 3 are alive and developing. I am confused tho they all look like they are at different stages of gestation yet they all a 3 look alive. (one other one is infertile)
That can happen--especially if the eggs were in a secret nest and a broody sat on them for a day or two. They will probably hatch over more days too.

Congrats!

An interesting discussion about air flow and hot cold spots in incubators. It's about cabinets but worth considering with any forced air incubator.

I've never had mites (fingers crossed) and I may be speaking out of turn but it has only be suggested to me and I've only recommended 5% Sevin dust.
Every time I clean the coop, after removing everything and vacuuming the cobwebs, I'll often hose everything down. After it all dries, I'll dust the cracks and crevices with Sevin. Then food grade DE goes everywhere else. roosts, floors, horizontal surfaces. After the fresh bedding goes down, a topcoat of DE.
I'm doing 2 coops today (if I have time before rain hits.)

Careful with seven dust. It is illegal in some states because it so powerful.
Ty for the link!I will read it.

Silkies like to just sit around on eggs for no reason. Even roosters. It's like a silkie hobby.
" oh there are eggs here maybe I'll stop a while"

My Marans used to steal the eggs from broodies silkies at about day 15. Then the silkies would go somewhere else.

Except for little sparkles who would try and get under the marans and attack...

I do my part. Chickens eat ground up Oyster shells, but all the Oysters we get to eat go straight back to the bay for the next crop. Won a bushel last week-end at a turkey shoot, ate about a 1/4 of them, gave 1/2 away... YUMMM (and no, no turkeys were shot at the turkey shoot!)

Yeah those pics of blood rings was from my WLH love looking into her eggs. The GCM's are going to be olive eggers cant wait to see how well they are can be sexed at hatch. Really waiting for my barred rocks to start laying and see about sexing those.

Does anyone use those yellow bators I see off e-bay and amazon http://www.amazon.com/Sanven-Automa...UTF8&qid=1387565717&sr=8-7&keywords=incubator I see them all the time when I go to look for bators but never heard of anyone using one.

I just got my new cockerel today...Zeus took the bus to freezer camp. He is so pretty...a Chocolate Orpington...love him!

Took my mom with me, she ended up bringing home a cockerel of her own! His father is an Americauna and the mama is one of the dorkings or orpingtons...can't remember what she said. He's an Easter Egger, regardless!

Can't wait till I get them integrated with my girls (splitting into two separate flocks) and Zeus' sqiggly tadpoles are out of their systems...I'm gonna have PURDY babies!!! Impatient now for my next hatch!!!

My new cockerel...haven't named him yet:

My mom's new boy:

You could follow the theme and name him Loki.

He looks very nice.
