5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Hey fellow chicken psychos- er- I mean people. It took me forever to get caught up! I haven't been on since last night. My husband wrecked his semi in Iowa late last night due to the fact that the idiots at the truck stop did not put deicer or salt or sand or anything on their parking lot so he ended up sliding into another truck. So now his looks like someone took a can opener to it. Ugh!
So I candled my eggs and culled 5, I'm now down to 27 eggs. 3 that I called were EQ and 2 were clear. Not too shabby I say.

:hugs
That must have been scary, :hugs
Glad to hear your eggs are doing well!

Well, I got uno a friend! Sign says araucana, but isn't that usually a fancy name for an EE?
Maybe but you could get lucky and actually get one. Was it from a feed store? Are they from a local breeder or a hatchery?

Y
yes, they do like each other. Chipmunk ( not her name) has already shown uno how to drink! Good girl!

Good point. For those that had not raised newly hatched chicks, after a couple days stick their beaks in the water and make sure they drink, know what water is and where it is.

I just pulled an egg for a slow leak it was quite sad as there was a started chick in it. But the chick would not have made it and sealing the leak would not work as I could not find it.
I went ahead and pulled the blood ring egg at the same time too. Now I'm left with 5 eggs that might hatch close to the first and 5 more eggs that I set a few days back.

You can probably find the leak in an egg like that by running it under 120 degree water briefly. That's enough to expand the contents and open the crack.

amazing some did I think 2 BC I marked them detached but now I'm hoping they do ok one is a saddle air cell so hmmm not so sure.... I followed the shipped eggs recipe. let settle 12-24 hrs, no turning fat end up in egg styrofoam egg cartons with bottoms cut out for O2 flow.... then I candled I think a little too much with an LED flashlight bright but not hot... temp was pretty steady except fir beginning when I had two incubators set up a still air old lab small incubator then my fan one came in then the egg turner got delayed... which was ok BC of the detached air cells..
did not really turn till day 3-4... now just crossing my fingers . these are bantam Cochin smooth or frizzles... I am in live with hatching eggs. do addictive
When you set the eggs for hatching, mark the outline of the saddle air cell and make sure the chick pips inside of it.

What! I am glad he is ok and of course the most important thing is that the eggs were tended too!

I bought her from the local feed store and they purchase from a hatchery. ( I don't know which one) she has the cutest fluffy cheeks!
