5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I think I have a fail - the chick that was pipping and zipping in the pretty green egg suddenly turned and started zipping down the side of the shell, and the next time I looked there was yolk dripping out of the shell and it was trying to breathe but the shell is filled with liquid. I opened up one side so it could get air, but it looks bad, yolk and what appears to be something that should be inside is outside. I think I will have to remove and cull. The one that was pipping at the wrong end, as long as I had the lid lifted I put on clean gloves, picked of a couple bits of shell and saw blood so I stopped, put it back in sideways so it was more correctly oriented. I think that one might be okay, fingers crossed, but the other one I'm almost certain is dying anyway and I think I should remove it from the hatcher.

So sorry!

We'll keep our fingers crossed for the downside up one.

Oh no!

Are you culling for vigor as a breeder? This sounds more like an incubation problem and not a vigor problem. You might want to try the tea cup for a day first.

I did hatch for a local breeder the last two years and I was not supposed to help and cull weak ones. I hope this years hatch will have more Vigor....
This chick had no chance. There was way too much that should have been inside, outside its body with active (bright red) bleeding, loss of quite a bit of yolk, labored breathing. I have never seen that much liquid show up inside a shell after being half zipped - the first stage of zip seemed to go perfectly, then all of a sudden it just went horribly wrong. It was floating in yolk and blood by the time I took it out. Very sad, but sometimes things go wrong. I agree it surely could be an incubation problem.

Pure awesomeness! My Am that I had to help finally jumped out if it's half a shell and is up moving a bit! And one of my gigantic JG roo over gold comet hen babies just hatched so we are up to 5! Woo hoo!!!!

Sounds more like the chick accidently broke it's own yolk sac. It happens occasionally. They snag it with their claws while turning in the shell. Nothing can be done about it just like nothing can be done when they pip through a vein & bleed out inside the shell. I have had both happen. Thankfully, neither is a common occurrence. If you hatch enough you will eventually encounter these issues.

It is hard to say. Where they shipped? Incubation is one of the three things we can control. Shipping and Breeder care are out of our control for shipped eggs.

Sorry about that one!

My first hatch to be successful!

Had to post more. These are both blue Orpington. I am seriously so happy I have tears in my eyes! My first attempt at hatching eggs last month was a disaster with no surviving chicks!

:love. That's wonderful!

I have three chicks running around in the incubator. It is so cool, but I am worried about them hurting the other eggs that have pipped but haven't hatched yet. Do I take the ones out, or just leave them?

I usually leave them in on the theory that they give the other eggs some motivation.

The
Can I get an AWWW? Chick # 1 wobbled its way across the bator and onto the cartons to go offer up-close help! Next time I will take out the thermometer and use a sponge in the tupperware. This is chick #1 a Brahmacauna (EE) Wobbling over to offer moral support to chick #2 What appears to be a BOxBrahma Swimming across the eggs Here it is: the AWWWW moment! Sticking close to offer a wing if needed.
