5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I just got home. I now have 8 pip's and a lot of cheeping coming from my bator. :celebrate
I hope they can hold out 4 more hours until the new year. :fl
I'm going to be up all night running back and forth from the incubator :weee to the refrigerator. (where is the fat smiley face?)

SEVEN chicks hatched! 5 left to go!

here is what I have found from getting silkie and OE cross eggs:
~blonde silkie
~grey silkie
~2 Japanese bantams
~2 OE crosses
~Japanese bantam silkie cross

FIVE left now..
~possibly another jap bantam
~3 OEs
~one silkie

Current tally... 2 out (look like probably roos - but that's just ducky!) Five or more pips. Hard to be sure, because the two early birds are climbing all over & rolling things around between naps. They have 'greeted' the pip with the pea-sized hole, not sure if it was social or pecking at the membrane.
Going to set up a temporary brooder & get them out of there in a few minutes. Not going to transfer two chicks to the greenhouse brooder tonight, it's supposed to get to 17 degrees and it's a bit of a walk. But that means opening... *shudder*

thanks!

we just colored their tails so we could identify the OEs and japs......

well...that totally messed up their feathers for e cutest chick hatched pictures....will the dye matter?

so....I think we have 4 hens and 2 roosters! form testing them anyhow.

CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE!!! I wish I could be celebrating with ya'll, but even with all of my trying bad luck has hit me again. None of the bantam eggs ever showed signs of growth and my one lone RIR egg did not make it till lockdown. I think I am going to let mother nature take its course next time and let one of my chickens go broody. I need a better incubator if not. Maybe it is just me, heck I don't know! LOL
