5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Here's a short video of my new baby quail. Moved 65 of them to the brooder last night, 3 more that hatched over night and I still have a few eggs that haven't hatched.

LOL..now that's just too darn cute! I hatched some button quail once, I forgot how cute they sound when they are this tiny. They sound like little squeak toys. Darling. What do you do with your quail? I kept mine indoors for a while. Had a great plan to keep them. Planned frizzled. Here is what I had and set up for a while.

They just didn't seem happy indoors, and I didn't have a place for them outside..could have downsized birds, but, I decided against keeping them. But, they were soo cute!

Beautiful photo..beautiful dog! I can see how they wouldn't mind the cold with a coat like that. Had a neighbor once that had three of his own, and also was into rescue for them Big Dog! I love big dogs. :)

Your buttons were so cute. We're raising the cots for meat and eggs. We have a large metal building and my husband made a "quail room" in one corner of it that measures about 10'x12' and I have a brooder and breeding pens set up in there. Makes it easier to keep them warm in the winter. This spring, I'm going to try to get a couple of coops/runs set up for them so that they can forage outside instead of being penned up all of the time.

Here are my babies:

Put the assisted hatch and last one to hatch in isolation (shoe box) inside the brooder! The black one in the shoe box is the one that was shrink wrapped, it also has a small protrusion at the umbilical area that the other chicks were picking at, hence isolation. I think it will be ok in a day or two. So my official count is 20 of 29 or 69%.

Can I ask some that have had more chick experience than me...
My lone survivor Hawke is 3 days from pip. Even though she seemed happy yesterday with her feather duster today she just sits and CHEEPS. I haven't seen her eat any crumble, she has picked it up but it seems to big for her. She is drinking water on her own and it has electrolytes and vitamins in it. Earlier she was quiet and I went to check on her and she was standing in the middle of the brooder, beak straight up in the air, and bubbles were coming out of her beak. What could be wrong? Is something wrong? What can I do to get her to eat something? I tried yogurt and all she did was peck it then sling her head around. I am going to be heart broken if I there is something I could have done and didn't....
