5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I've never participated in one of these, but why not. I should have some Buckeyes and possibly La Flèche eggs to set that week. I'll be doing a lot of hatching in the next year and this could be a good way to start off(even though I currently have 3 dozen set already :p).

I am really looking forward to the La Fleche!

I am planning to get some from Urch in the Spring.

I asked this question on another thread and didn't get any responses. I figure you people who hatch in the dead of winter would probably know the answer so here goes...

When you hatch when its cold out (like January 1st) and then next winter comes along, do your birds you hatch so early in the year go through a big molt? Generally they molt at around 18 months or their second winter but this year, I have several birds that were hatched last winter that are going through a molt. So, how about it, is this normal for winter hatched babies?

Yes, they will molt the first year. It is not bad though--they will be laying eggs when others are still hatching their first batch.

It will be a quick molt though and mine kept laying through it.

I got a picture of the Christmas lights on the pen. The pullets are Cream Legbar X Crele Penedesenca

I just got my eggs lined up, so I am definitely in this hatch along. I decided to go with Silkies for my 3 Daughters since they love them and they really want to start a flock of their own(they are 11, 7 and 6).
I will be getting my hatching eggs shipped from another BYC member.

How exciting! Gotta love Silkies!

I'm hoping to have my AM's laying so I can hatch them and d'uccle usually they throw a bone, but a lot are going to the show so I doubt they will lay.

1). What are AMs?

2). Show... When? Where? Best of luck to you!

Welcome aboard! Looks like you've got this hatching thing down!

Lacy Blues...love your Avatar : ). I have a thing for blue chooks. I usually hatch through the winter, I had one pullet that molted last year in the dead of winter, I was concerned, but she was fine. In fact, she grew in the most beautiful glossy feathers ever!

Ron! Glad you got your priorities in order. ; ). Great lights...so festive, and productive at the same time.

So I've got a problem here....made a pot of weak coffee. Dare I dump the whole thing out and start a fresh one? Or must I keep suffering with every sip? I may want to post this in the Emergencies section....
