5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Well one of the ladies that buys eggs from us said I could also use her incubator to hatch more than I was going to. I was going to hatch just one incubator full but now I will be doing two incubators. We have gotten so many customers buying eggs from us we are currently taking orders for eggs. All eggs are a couple weeks on hold..... So we need at least two incubators for more hens. Also instead of hatching just our barnyard mix we will be getting a couple dozen from a farm up the road to hatch. From what I seen they look to be mostly barred rocks.

they will

primarily pullets! Instead of bringing in the new year worry free we will all be

worrying over the fuzz butts making it out of their shells.

Do not worry like this!

Think about this:

It will be the start of a great year!

I have a question. If I take a Hen today and put her with a rooster will the eggs I collect the week of the 11th be his or could a Rooster that has been around her still have an effect?

It would be close. Sperm can live in a hen up to 30 days, but most does not make it past 14 days. I would do it!

Mine will be a surprise hatch as well. Hopefully. Lets see... We have red sex links, SLW, RID, dark Cornish or something like that, a few mutts, silkies, Cochins, and a whole bunch I can't think of right now. I think the 15 degree weather is freezing my brain. LOL. I'm going to go look at some DIY incubators and see what I come up with. Next year I really want to do some BBS and Lavendar orps, and quail, at least. A few turkeys would be great, not sure where they would live though LOL.
Ok now that my brain is working I would like to add Americaunas, Russian Orloff, Speckled Sussex, American Wheaton (?) and a couple others I can't think of again. We have too many to remember LOL. If I don't get any eggs, I guess I will have to order some. But it has been getting like 15 degrees at night, not sure they would do ok in shipping???

Those are great breeds!

Have them add a heat pack. Some of the heat packs last for a couple of days.

I'm planning on doing this again this year, but am hoping to be getting more eggs by then. Very little happening right now in the egg department. Maybe if I get those Christmas lights up in the coop it might get them in the spirit of things!
