5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Wow! This sounds exciting! I'm new here and I'm thrilled to see these exciting events :) I can't join this year, but I'll definitely put this on my bucket list next year.

We are just a bunch of..................................

Love your avatar!

Oh boy. Well I plan to join, but the way my hatch rates have been on shipped eggs (0%), looks like I'll be joining for the fun and not prizes. Of course the only girls I have laying fertile eggs have stopped for the year.

I will set up a cutest chick hatched and a best participant contest too.

You have a chance!

Winchester??!  I lived there back in the 60's!    I loved VA.  That place, and Stephen City is my best past memories.  My grandmother had chickens in Stephen City, not in Winchester.  Bet it has changed bunches!

I actually live about 15 min. west of Winchester. That's getting to be quite a big city now.
The VA country is beautiful. Shenandoah Valley... Love it! We moved from a city in MD to 5 acres, which meant I could finally have chickens!!

They will be fine if the can dry out over night.

I let mine out in the rain. The first year I kept them locked in the coop on rainy days, but now I just let them do their thing.

I haven't worried about the rain much, until today when it was so cold. One was just standing out in the yard doing nothing, and I was concerned that maybe, like humans, chickens go through that stage of hypothermia where they don't realize they are cold. So I got them all in the coop and scattered scratch to keep them occupied. It was almost bed time, but they were still mad.

I'm embarrassed to tell you what DH keeps this heat box at, but lets put it this way, tank tops and shorts are in order. I don't know what I'll do when I go through the change….toss him out? Although I'm enjoying the toasty~ness right this moment. Cleaned 3 coops and 2 goat pens this morning before the freezing rain came…well, got MOST of it done before the freezing rain and now I'M freezin! Nothing like getting soaked through to make you appreciate a hot cup a tea!
Oh my goodness Blarney! Please have your DH speak with mine! We are constantly fighting over the heat. 65 or lower is what he wants, I want 70.
