I'm in for this years hatch-a-long. May not be setting chicken eggs this year as the girls have pretty much stopped laying. I'll be setting Khaki Campbell's, Coturnix and Button quail.

Don't they have a lethal gene? Or a genetic defect that can cause them to die suddenly? I saw an auction on here for eggs, and that was a disclaimer.
Araucanas have a lethal gene, not Ameraucanas.Don't they have a lethal gene? Or a genetic defect that can cause them to die suddenly? I saw an auction on here for eggs, and that was a disclaimer.

Yeah, I just looked for what I read..It was Chooks Chick that warned that they are prone to die at any age for no apparent reason. That's what scared me off.![]()

Yes, I have heard of this happening before. The cause was tracked down to a strain of e coli that the breed was not resistant too. A Necropsy detected the strain and a certain anti biotic was recommended.Huh. I'd say that's true of any chicken in the world, to tell you the truth.
ahh, I had not seen that. But they have to have a very small gene pool atm so it does not surprise me there would be some indomant genes coming out and biting them. They are all decendant from one hen in texas not THAT long ago iirc...Yeah, I just looked for what I read..It was Chooks Chick that warned that they are prone to die at any age for no apparent reason. Oh WOW! I LOVE this idea!! We had our own bird yesterday, it was lovely. The 23 yr old who recently got her own place could not stop saying, 'Thanks Mom. I REALLY miss your cooking.' Melts my heart….makes those teen years seem like a very distant memory.
