I have a question regarding placement of our incubator. We heat with wood only. Yes, this normally works fine in our part of CA as passive solar will heat the house 1/2way and wood the rest. Right now it is excessively cold and we are having to keep our living quarters blazing hot to keep the bedrooms up to 60. Where is the best spot for our incubator? Will it be affected by outside temp? Genesis HB 1588. First time hatchers - with odd questions.

In a place that is quiet and keeps the most stable temperature. Out of the light and not drafty but with good air flow.

Kitchen table, no. My incubators are in the master bedroom closet.

How do you calibrate a thermometer?

boiling point or freezing point. Stick it into some ice water and see if it says 32.

For those that are collecting eggs in extremely cold weather or may have a power outage there is some good and assuring information on the Brinsea site. It's well worth reading through the whole thing. One won't have to ask so many questions.

Anyone remember what Ron said to do with the rocker arms on my Genesis to get the temp corrected? I can't find my manual and just went back over 200 posts on here....arrrgh!

Ok, I got it! Pushed rocker arm 5 in....gonna check temp in a bit.

Oh, I was being dumb! Of course. I should'v thought before I asked. Thank you! My master closet doesn't clear 60 degrees so that's probably too cold. I'm thinking - may have to move furniture to block out a space that won't get bumped by my live-in elephants.

60 degrees is the low edge, but if it stayed at that temp....I have a little heater that I use in the winter to keep the temperature stable. It was like 20 dollars and has a thermostat on it--I set it to come on when the temp drops. It also has tipping shut off and all of those new safety features.

It does not take too much energy to heat a closet.

Today starting off..NOT GOOD.....................
Mother Nature fooled the weatherman again and it is snowing like crazy.............
Last nights report was no chance of snow in my area.....................
Furnace went out last night so typing fast to keep my fingers from freezing up.

I did get my little Serama hen in the house yesterday Babies anytime now...due Sunday.....

Still feeling sorry for myself for not ordering eggs....
I have a ton of mixed from my layer flock.but do not think fertility is great..........
to many hens for one Roo...
oh well, I'll just be happy to be part of this anyway...............

Yes the ambient temp where it is will have some effect on it. I keep mine in the back part of my bedroom which was hanging around 60* most of the time i was incubating my ducks and it worked out fine. I would think that someplace a bit cooler would be better than someplace way too hot. That's what seems to make sense to me anyway. I'm still very new at this.

You can also use jugs of water as heat sinks too. Line them up by your blazing fire to pick up he heat and then transfer them to the closet to radiate the heat there. I put fist sized rocks in my incubator to work as heat sinks to keep temps level. Be sure to bleach any rocks you use inside your bator though. Bricks work well if you don't have stones.
