5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Me too! I just sit on my lawn chair on a nice warm sunny day, with a good book and a drink right in the middle of the yard, while they free range all around me.
its extremely relaxing!! until they wander too far and you have to heard them back home lol. I try not to bring my cell phone out with me, or at least just leave it in my pocket, its nice to spend some time away from the world :)

im so nervous :( these three weeks cant go by fast enough! i think i am going to put them into the incubator in an hour at noon. I candled and it was my first time candling but i saw air cells in all the eggs. One egg it looked like there were too air cells (like 2 smaller spots right next to each other) is there anything i can do for that egg? i wrote down which it was so i can keep an eye on it. im not going to touch them again until next week. i dont want to mess them up! this experience really teaches you how fragile life is...
The air cell should go back together. I have see them split int a bunch of bubbles and be ok.

It sounds like the made good shape!

Ohh Man. Eggs won't get here till tomorrow

I had to set some early, yesterday, and now..hopefully, the others will get here to set a day later. She mailed yesterday.

Ha, just went and checked the tracking..it's still in Pennsylvania.. Probably won't get here until Fri. I'm in Utah.

If it weren't for the fact that we are setting at a certain time for the actual NYD, then maybe there could be a couple of different setting times. But that's what this is..NYD hatch a long. Our babies will hatch, when they hatch, if they hatch after such a long trip in the cold. Didn't expect these others to be out there for so long. :/
Wish I could just go out to my coop and collect. Would be great to be able to own a rooster. :)

The best thing you can do for it is to let it sit upright (fat end up) undisturbed to allow the air cell to merge and reattach. I have a darling little duckling right now who came from an egg that started with a detached air cell. So there is hope for that egg.

I candled my eggs last night and of the 12 SFH eggs that shipped 8 have detached air cells. I'll be setting them at noon here and leaving them upright with no turning for a couple of days at least. I did mark the 8 so I can see how my hatch rate is with those.

I love sitting out in nice weather and watching "chicken tv". They are so fun to watch. I find it very relaxing and they make me laugh all the time.

Hey All. Sliding in under the wire! My hatching eggs showed up at the p.o. early this morning, so now I get to join the fun for the first time this year. I'm setting:
13 FBCMs
1 silver laced Cochin and, 7 FBCM/black tailed buff marans,
