5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I set my eggs last night at 9:15. The genesis is loaded with 4 lavender orphingtons, 5 Wheaten marans, 4 lavender ameracaunas, 3 delawares, 3 leg horns, 6 silkies, 2 welsummers, and two others.

I got this thing from a local hobby shop. It is called a fuel bottle, it is used to fuel an R/C car and cost less than $5.00. I use it to put water in my incubator without any spills.

Edited to add... if you empty it you can squeeze out some air and then suck water back out of the incubator.
That is a great idea!

ok.....so this wont affect their growing......correct? I don't want problems with their growth bc my humidity was too low for the first few days!

if my temp is fine on both thermometers I have, I shouldn't touch it right? its perfect.....its been perfect since I put the eggs in.
If it is holding perfect temp then don't mess with it. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I don't have an actual egg candler but what are some homeade ways I can make one? and it has to hold smaller eggs too

Get the brightest led flashlight(The ones that use three AAA batteries) and cut a small length of PVC pipe. Tape the flashlight to one end and then use the other end to candle the egg.

SureFire flashlight.. $$$, but if you bought if for the husband (or wife) for Christmas and just borrow if for candling, win win!

I made one but I went over board like I do when building anything. I made a 11in x 11in box put a light kit in there then put a strong led flood light where all the leds are close together. On top of that I put a pvc flange then put a hole in the top board and have the flange sitting in that. Then over top of that I have part of a black rubber phone case and cut a hole in it so no mater the egg size I can candle and it's not hitting anything hard. I also mounted it to my wall about 1foot above my table so I could just hold the egg big end up and have the light shine through the air bubble. For me easier to see movement that way. gonna load ya up with pics I love my home made thing lol.

some quick pros and cons though.
pros
1 can build cheap and bulb lasts no batteries needed.
2 Can put any type/lumens of bulb in there just have to watch temp. it's why I went led and I think its rated at 1200 lumens. Too hot a bulb could cook an egg.
3 Using my wall mount I can move eggs from bator to under it fast with minimum time out of bator since I have both hands free.
4 Cost is fairly cheap think 9 for bulb 4 for light kit can get wood from 51cent parts wood at home depot or buy a cheap board correct size or use plywood laying around.
5 Hard as heck to loose it!!! Yes this is a problem for my family and flash lights. I bought a 70 dollar defender light that was like 900 lumens I think, and it's no where to be found. I wanted to make sure I could see those maran eggs lol.
6 using a rubber covering if I press slightly on it it will block all light none going around sides blinding me or drowning out the light from inside the egg.
Cons.
1 Have to build it lol
2 Cant move unless its demounted from wall but even then it's big and bulky. I was planning on setting it up right but I like looking through air cell best can see internal peeps easier and movement later stages.
3 I didn't get a kit that has a switch in cord so on and off is plug being put in. Which aint a problem if your not using a hot bulb.

This is using my golden cuckoo maran egg fist time I've tried it on a maran egg, and I cant wait to test on the ones I'm hatching.

The cell phone case hole compared to egg. under the case is 1 1/2 inch hole I think it is.

If I remember right a 1 3/4 to 1 1/2 then a coupler to go from straight pipe to threaded I was going to have it threaded through the wood but desided I didn't want it poping out. So threads of pipe sit within the wood.

Top of box threaded end in the wood.

Well I ordered my brinsea spot check today at like 4 am. It's already in the mail and got a tracking number. Set to get here dec 16. Total cost 29.99. 19.99 for it 10 for shipping. I didn't see a coupon for it any where but don't care seeing I have over that much in thermometers in my bator now and don't trust any of them lol.

Just thought I would toss out cost and estimated time incase anyone thought of ordering. That's through brinsea website.

very nice!

Thanks. Yet another thing I drove the wife crazy with chicken stuff lol I built it in living room so sawdust on floor and banging hammer. Cant let her get unmad before I get my ducks lol. Then again all I have to do is keep a steady flow of chicks in the house and she's never happy. She hates them inside.

Careful MsLadyHawke, you may not have enough information to make that decision wisely....... I may have an unfair advantage.......... ;)
Ron, warn her before she gets into trouble. :gig

He could cook for me, I'm adventurous!

Ladies, I guess we'd better cool it, Mrs. Canoe might read all this and make him stay away! (Or we may ruin him with all the attention......)

Sorry I didnt respond sooner, was at a chicken club meeting.
Ok, I'll bite, you advantage is: A) you're a professional female kick boxer, B) you WILL eat raccoon, C) you're already his wife , or D) none of the above, but you agree i am hysterically funny!!!
Hehehe, sometimes i crack myself up! :lau

My new official count is 50! I have 52 in the bator. I'm not counting 2 because 1 is infertile and the other was a fertility test and is due to hatch on the dec 20
