5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Thanks!

I would still give them free choice Oyster shell calciuim. It is very in expensive and comes in large bags. I go through one a year about.
Oh I do.

They have containers of oyster shell always available and they get all egg shells from eggs we use. I was just offering a solution to someone's ? of how they could get enough calcium if it wasn't available to buy any more.

Yeper doodles..you are going to be a day late, I'll be a day early. Still, come on and ask questions, answer questions, or just follow along for the fun..because some of these guys and gals can get silly at times. But I never. do.

No never. Of course not...

Candled today. From 36 eggs, 4 were blood ringed, 2 were obvious clears. I have 4 more 'iffy', so I'm going to keep them till the 10th day. The Gold Laced Wyandotte egg with the pinhole in it is not only growing, but thriving - two little eyes and moving around a little on its own accord! I resealed the hole and crossed my fingers some more...and I didn't even WANT a GLW! I just can't help cheering for the underchicken. I think my EEer egg is a goner, though. It had veins on the 7th day, but today it looked like it had a blood ring -- so it's one of the 4 iffy.

I don't know what to think. I was expecting you know...maybe 4 or 5 chicks. At this rate, it's looking more like 2 dozen. :hmm

At least they're primarily 3/4 RIRs, so the pullets will be layers.

Bummer about the blood rings but that is great all the other eggs are doing well. Two dozen sounds like a good number of chicks to me! I hope they all hatch for you. And my DH is "DIEING" for a golden laced anything lol. I hope she hatches for you.

The most important part, how could I forget.lol.
I have just sold a bunch of my original flock and have decided to go into breeding White Leghorn ( yes I know, how boring ) but I love WLH's, they are fantastically big and white and large red combed haha.
So I have got 15 WLH eggs and I also stuck in 2 Frizzle eggs because my frizzle just started laying ( after her moult ) so I really wanted to see how they would come out.

What are you hatching Chicken Pickin?

WLH are so sweet. I have been wanting a frizzle ever since I discovered them. I think they just look awesome. I have really been wanting a buff colored/red frizzle. Just one, so I can admire the cuteness.

yesterday I candled a few of my eggs.....so far I have 4 very nice babies moving round!

I didn't check all eggs, but still my refrigerated eggs are showing nada.

bummer.

also, I think one of my silkie babies died! I have no idea......candle day I didn't see anything and there was a strange blob, different than all the rest of the babies.
then again, eggs are nature, and if she did die in the egg the was nothing I could do.

im not checking the eggs anymore until day 10, for the fear me candling them prob id something.....but ive only candled twice.

im just praying they will all be ok, and ill come out with at least 10 chicks. I hope, and ill pray.

I'm so scared......did my candling bother them?!?!?!??!? do you think I could check this egg again?

I checked it about 2 days ago.

I am hatching Silkies(shipped to me by another BYC member) They are blue, black, splash, white and paint. And from my flock I am hatching Black Copper Marans and Olive Eggers.

hmmmm I see something that may be a blood ring. It seems quite thick and ropey, though, so maybe it's veins. I saw something dark blobby in another one, or my hopes were deceiving me. I am adding a more powerful flashlight to my wish list, as I can't even see air cells in most of them. Some of them seem darker, though, which may be a good thing. Now, I have to be good and leave them alone until Christmas.

Ah, the waiting! It would be so cool if I got a couple of chickies out of this!

Hey ya'll, I need help.

I had problems with humidity being way too high for the first five days. I was advised to remove all water and go dry for a few days. Humidity has been at 16% for two days.

Today is day 7. I candled, and traced the air cells with a pencil (not sure if that was ok to do, but hadn't come across a post that said it wasn't). I think my air cells are too small, based on the reference picture located in post #1. I'm posting some pics of the traced air cells, hoping someone could tell me if they are too small.

I'm down to 7 eggs out of 10. I knew #'s 8 and 9 were clears, had movement in the rest, until today...egg #6 is still. No movement. So I think it's a quitter, but leaving it just in case.

Here's the pics:

This is the one with no movement. Is that dark ring a "blood ring"?

The fact that you say your humidity has been at 16% for 2 days makes me think you have an Acurite. That's what I use, and they don't read below 16%. So, it could be lower than 16%, which is strange with aircells that small. Curious... Since the eggs are yours, and if you put them in very fresh they would have smaller aircells than an older or shipped egg. I wonder, are they very hard thick shelled eggs?
