5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I just did my candling which is the night of Day 10 with my 3 Daughters. Out of the total 38 eggs we set this is the results as of tonight

32 SHIPPED Silkie eggs - 12 clears, 1 Blood ring, 19 Veining
3 MY BCM eggs - 1 clear(glowing egg), 2 developing(egg dark only glowing on top)
3 MY OE eggs - 3 almost certain developing (no glowing eggs all dark except in air cell)

So If I am accurate on our candling I have 24 developing out of 38 eggs. Not to bad I think.

Well, I think I'm going to win the worst hatch rate.lol.
I got of to terrible start with my humidity going bonkers ( mid 60% ).
Hopefully my little eggs will make it.

I am very impatient! I go in and stare at the eggs. They just sit there and look like eggs. I fight the urge to candle them every three seconds, though I can't see a blasted thing, when I do candle them.

I candle every night

After all, they aren't shipped eggs and new studies show it is good for them to get a cool down once a day. This mimics the hen getting off the nest once a day to eat and drink.

Sadly they were people caused losses not animals. Over 140 lost total. The biggest losses were poisoned. Some were just let out of pens for dogs and coyote to get. The last 30 or so were shot and left for anything that could carry them off... found tons of birdshot blood and feathers but no birds. I have an empty 340 egg capacity incubator, empty brooders ready to go and a newly completed brand new coop that's nearly empty. I will gladly take chicks eggs or anything else

I have 4 eggs that have really dark shells. So ffar I can not see a thing with the flashlight that I have used to candle in the past. I can see into my RIR eggs with the flashlight but their shell is light brown. Any recommendations for a good but cheap candler?

Finally candled my eggs tonight and removed three duds. A few of the darker ones were questionable, but saw a lot of active little peanuts wiggling around in the others. Super excited to see how this hatch turns out! We lost power yesterday for a couple hours. I waited two hours for the power to come back, but broke down and took them to our house for sale. Only it was out of power too. I drove like 15 MPH both ways and every bump in the road felt like an earthquake! By the time I got back home, dug out a generator from the back of storage, figured out how to start it (what has a valve on the gas cap?!), and plugged the incy in the power was back. Go figure! 4 hrs elapsed, but supposedly it was still 90 degrees in there.

Well I _really_ want to candle again, but we are in a high wind storm, w/ tornado watches all around us so I'm kind thinking I should leave the lid on/heat in and resist the temptation. I pulled a bunch of clears & obvious blood rings (and an egg w/ a small piece of the shell missing??!! although the membrane was intact & no ooz it was just too big a chunk to risk what few others of the shipped egg are struggling along) night before last.

I think I still have atm 29 of the shipped eggs & my 4 in the bator, but really I think only about 7 of the shipped eggs maybe ok based on my notes so far, was gonna sort it all out tonight.

Now I just want the electric to say on, & nothing to blow away.

Oh a happy note -- I have made 19 half-pints of Pomegranate Jelly from fruits I was gifted & I think it is gonna set so at least some setting is going well here

I did my day 10 candle tonight. Of 13 Lav Orps I have 11 going strong, 2 were blood ring lightbulbs. Of the 3 EE from my flock all 3 are going very strong. But out of 12 SFH I only have 1 growing.

So sad. I wanted the SFH so very badly. 3 others just barely started and then died. The rest never started at all.

So sorry about the SFHs That's a bummer. But there's always the Easter hatch a long too (; Try again! And yay for your lavender orps! I love mine. So pretty.
