5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I had a frizzle Columbia that was a scary mom. Even I was afraid of her. With those already frizzled feathers and then she would huff up and charge. It was like, I'm outta here.
I had a black Leghorn hatch lots of chicks for me so you never know. Life's a box of chocolates.

Lots of protein and it doesn't kill your cats. Best thing is to put it out of your mind.

LOL DH had the same reaction - "The cats like it, and they're all still here, what's the big deal?"

I have one Silkie who takes defending the nest quite seriously too - makes the most awful screeching noises ever, sounds similar to your frizzle - luckily she's small. There are few things as entertaining as a 2 lb hen making herself as large as possible, wings down, hackles up, dancing back and forth daring me to "cross this line."

My sister and her husband live in Fairbanks and just opened a restaurant out on Chena Hot Springs Road a few months back. She is always texting or posting the temps up there...especially when ya'll are getting -30 and -40 degree weather. Last year or the year before it was -50 or -60...can't remember...and I told her to run outside and spit...to see if it froze before it hit the ground. It didn't. I was bummed. Thought that it would...I cannot imagine temperatures that cold.

Then again, my hubby always tells me I'd be freezing while standing on the sun wrapped in a parka.

really ,,Remmber the name,,, I had a contact with a gal on that road On the NORTH thread,,several of us last spring talked of hooking up.. She offered her place out there,,some 25 miles from me,, Fun fun...

Georgia weather SUCKS! It's 70 something degrees outside and pouring down rain. Ugh! My silkie who went broody exactly a week after I set my bator just tried to kill me when I went to get her water. She's so crabby! My silkie who hatched her babies on Thanksgiving is now in an empty rabbit hutch and seems to think I'm gonna steal the chicks when I come out to feed them. My chickens have gone insane!

Could be worse, here I'm Ohio it's been between 37 and 50 or so * and raining for 2 1/2 days with about 4 inches of snow melt

Hmm, not sure if my sister is the same gal...she's here on BYC, but hasn't been "on" for a while...their restaurant keeps them so busy, she doesn't have time. Her BYC name is BolanSixx. Their restaurant is Arctic Clover. If you ever get up that way, you should check them out...her hubby is the cook, and a culunary chef...his cooking is amazing.

Anyway, she had some bad luck in the beginning with her first flock. Some of her chicks died. Predators got some when they got older and were outside. Ya'll got some pretty cold temps a few weeks back...she ended up bringing her pullets indoors, keeping them in their heated garage. She got her first batch of chicks a little after I got mine...so she's had them less than a year, like me.

I'll keep my Virginia weather. No negative thirties here, no siree.

If my psychochicken were broody, she would have an excuse for her attitude. She isn't - has yet to even lay her first egg. She is just an EE, and apparently they tend toward "character."

I will take our sunshine and 35 degree weather here. Although, if anyone would like some mud from the latest snow melt, you're welcome to it.
