5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Cocci are present everywhere, and medication isn't needed for healthy chicks living in a healthy environment (inside or outside), as they will build up an immunity by exposure. Also, if brooding in deep litter, it's actually best not to clean it out from a previous hatch, as beneficial bacteria will thrive in the brooder, giving the next set of chicks additional strength to their immune systems.

ETA: if a chick experiences coccidiosis and its flock mates do not, it indicates a weakness, and should not be used to breed.

I don't use medicated feed. I treat them if they get cocci.

Works great so far!

Oh crap, ya'll! My wonderful mother bought me an ecoglow 50 chick brooder for Christmas and I was so excited! I kept a huge box that presents were shipped in and was *planning* on using it as my brooder box (I used giant cardboard boxes last year for my chicks and it worked out great). I just finished setting the box up...and the ecoglow takes up so much room! It's as wide as the box, but I read you should make sure there is room all around the ecoglow to prevent chicks from getting stuck, so I have to put it in lengthwise...and it takes up about 2/3 of the box!! Is that going to cut it?? If not, I don't know what I'm going to do! Suggestions??

The 50 is different. They will not get stuck in the same way.

If you have a 50, you need someone to build you a big brooder LOL

I think I'm getting sick, Oh no, I went over to my BF's sisters house on Christmas and her husband was spreading the holiday sickness like we all wanted it for a gift....Now I can't stop coughing, that is what he had and I have to work on new years eve and new years day (actually signed up to work double time and holiday pay for both days, can't pass that up)

My brother is sick...my grandma is sick...my dad has been around her all day...that meand he will get sick. Yay.

I wanted my friends to come over on new years, but with everyone sick, they may not be able to! My babies could get sick!

Aaahhhhhh!!!

Oh and on another note I just did the clay test as described below.

(Take a ball of clay and put it in the incubator and after 4 hours take it's internal temperature with an oral thermometer.) An oral thermometer has to be guaranteed to be within 0.01 degrees of real temp to pass inspection.

My reading was 95.4 What is this going to do to my hatch.
Still didn't get an answer. I made a video of one of my egg candles. I am hoping someone can tell me if the development was way to slow and if all my chicks will die.

Or if they are fine and not mess with the temp. My thermometers are cheap one's and as I have found out are probably not accurate. I have now noted that I need to go 4 degrees higher next time. They have been incubating at this temp from the start. I will put the link for the video here and on another post as soon as it is done uploading. Our internet provider has a very slow upload speed and it will be another hour before it is complete on youtube.

I'm sorry no one has responded to you. I did not, because this is my first incubation ever. I was browsing through Incubating and Hatching Eggs here on BYC earlier today, and read a post that might help.
