5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Likely just caused by internal pip to air cell. But I have two eggs active. One Buckeye One La Flèche, broken through, making contact with the outside world at Day 19.

I can't wait to see them!

hey Montanadolphin, praying mantis are so cool. have u ever tried to raise any of the exotic species? orchid mantis's are so awesome looking.
Nope, no exotic mantids (plural for mantis) here. I find oothecas (praying mantis egg sacs) on shrubs in my yard and hatch them inside. Then I keep a few and let the rest go. Once they've molted a few times, I let the rest go except for the one I'm going to keep. We have European Mantis, Chinese Mantis, and Carolina Mantis here in Virginia. They all look pretty much the same...nothing like the orchids...those are gorgeous!

Now that I have chickens, not sure I'll be able to find any around...I'm sure the chickies will gobble them up as soon as they see them!!

25 of 29 officially into lockdown. I candled last night and marked air cells and placed all into my newly completed cabinet incubator with temps holding steady at 99 and humidity at 65%. While I was candling I could see movement in everyone. Of the 29 originally set I had 3 clears and 1 quitter around day 9 or 10.

I have a question about hatching fat end up in cartons. Will the eggs still rock? Doesn't seem to me like they can if they are surrounded by cardboard!!!

They move in the cartons too. They do not need to move. The chick needs to get into position. The egg cartons keep the hatched chicks from kicking them around.

I'm sure they probably will gobble them right up. I know mine slurp up walking sticks like french fries. So I imagine mantids would meet the same fate. Has anyone else ever seen ducks hunt wasps and hornets? During the summer I'd be watching the chickens and ducks out foraging (one of my favorite pastimes

) and would see the ducks jump up and snatch wasps right in mid-flight and gobble them down. We didn't have near the problems with wasp swarms this year as we usually do. A nice change.
