5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I have been trying to go to sleep. But I have images of chicks dancing in my head. :jumpy :yiipchick :cd
Now that I have visited Ron's cam and watched his eggs for a few minutes I am now sleepy.
Ron put some background music on or something. LOL

Why, hello there little one. You're early!

Twenty minutes later, at 3:30 on the nose, we had this:

And here's the shell from the first egg that I bred (ever) and hatched (ever)!

And yes, I do have a thing for leopard print, why do you ask?

YAH YOU! It is sooo cool when you finally get a chick from your own birds :) In my NYDH that CL Prince was one I incubated last spring so that will be extra special to see hatch...

And now both of my SFH have pipped!!! Popcorn!!!!

EXCELLENT! Sadly none of my 8 shipped SFH made it to LD. Were yours shipped? or your own birds...
I'm intending to made some here w/ birds I'm growing out, but it will be a few months b/f that happens & I was hoping for a few more pullets, of course, aren't we all ;>

"OK, I'm LOCKED DOWN & still worried if the hatcher is going to behave :(

apparently the never-touch-the-dial LG dial got way bumped sometime last week, so I've spent all day getting it re-adjusted...

From the original 49 eggs I now have locked the following #ed eggs

MFL12

CL(?)15

BAM19,20,21,22,24,26,29,30

OE(F2autosexing no less) 40

LavAme 33

& my homemade CL Prince over a brown egg layer 47

So from the shipped eggs which were packed very well but treated badly by PO it appears the BAM were somehow stronger than the others, esp. the BCM & SFH none of which made it to LD.

I will note that at least 5 of these eggs in LD were ALIVE when I candled as they went in, but some of the air cells are very large & some just odd so we'll see how it goes...

My hatch is done. Had the three hatch that were pipped today. Checked the other three..they didn't make it. :( Looks like the first one I looked at died on the first day of lock down, smelled like it too. :/ I had two Rhodebars hatch before DH and I left for a while, thought the marans would still be working on it when I got home, but she/he was out. Very pretty blue. I think I have one girl and one boy Rhodebar. The yellow one is a wonder to me. Doesn't look like what I thought the boys would look like. These were put in a bator by themselves..so, I know they are all Rhodebars, and then a few marans were sent. One Marans made it to lockdown and hatched. :)

My happy dance...Click on them, they will dance again.

Well, I thought I was going to have New Years Eve babies, they decided to come early! Starting to walk around already!

Sooo happy for everyone one with pips, zips and chicks!!!

It's quiet here, even the rocking has stopped. My biggest prayer tonight will be that I will wake up to pips tomorrow!! I am keeping my 2 nieces and nephew tomorrow so my little brother can have a wild New Years Eve. The kids have never seen chicks hatch before, so that would be a wonderful treat for them. Come on chickies!!

Happy Hatching!

Meet my '19 chicks and counting' coop.

There are still 7 in the bator, but I will leave them a few more days (tonite is Day 24). The 4 blondies are my sports...I have 8/12 CCL/SBELs, 5/9 Marans (4 black and 1 blue...wasn't sure I would like furry legs but they are pretty cute!), and 6 of my own eggs. Out of mine I have 2 RIR x EE (cutest EVER chipmunk stripes), 1 RIR x production red, 1 RIR x mystery, 1 Rhodebar, and 1 RIR x BO (I think).

If no more hatch, my shipped hatch rate is 62% and my own egg hatch rate is 50% . I'm not very hopeful about the ones still in the bator...no noise, no movement.

Going to go catch up reading since my last post. Hope you are all having successful hatches!

Those are nice looking chicks!

Does the mirror help when you have so many in there?

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR A CHICK TO HATCH?!??!??!?!??!? LOL

im sooooooooooooooooooooo impatient!

its been just about 3 hours, and I set a 24 hour timer the moment I saw the pip....which was a few seconds after it happened....I am puppy guarding this incubator! LOL

I relly want to know HOW LONG does a full hatch of one egg take? it would be COOLIO to know!

I have had some chicks hatch within a couple hours of seeing the pip while others it's been almost 24 hours. So it can be a big window :) the first eggs I hatch in my mini I literally sat up all night to see the first chick come out.

Good luck with your hatch.
