6 month old Broody hatching First time Journal

Day 17

Sad news I lost an egg today it wasn't viable it was the porous shell buff orps egg. I was concerned about it from the start, the buffs had a hard summer and aren't laying great so the quality wasn't good enough

I came home to three left out of four with no smell but a wet deep spot of dirt in the nest and a bit of shell spot as in the size of a hand so

I'm just hoping for one chick at least poor Rambita she's doing such a good job I love it :hit:cool:

Well, the good new's is that you only have just a few day's left to find out if any of them do hatch. Good luck! I'm afraid that if none do hatch though, that she might continue to be broody. That's what I have heard happen's with them anyway's.

Sorry to hear you lost one, it's amazing how attached we can get to them or rather the potential of what they could be! I'm also down to 4 and really hope we get at least one too, my broody has started looking a bit ragged even though I see her out twice a day eating and drinking. Good luck

Thanks good luck to you too, I don't like seeing her lower weight even though I do see broody poops and she eats well just not often enough

Yeah, I'm hoping for the ee Guava's egg. She's young and the egg is strong and wasn't too small

If nothing happens I'm going to block off her box she only wants that box none others will do so maybe that will force her out if worse comes to worse that method worked on Callie ...

I haven't had the chance to enclose her every day one ee comes to leave a green egg and I'm always taking it out of the clutch so this way she won't be disturbed. I'm planning on enclosing her today

My worry is day 21 is set for Sunday/Monday and Monday I won't be here for most the day to see how things go so hoping for a Sunday hatch!

How long should I wait to test the eggs if no hatch? Day 22?.... thinking so.

I'm sorry you lost an egg. I hope the remaining 2 are ok!

Have you been checking under her so she is used to it? Even if she is sweet now, once she has babies she likely won't be :gigAlso, I would start checking for chicks day 19 or 20 due to the heat.

Thanks! I'm mostly disappointed for Rambita I want her to be a mama cause she wants so bad to be... Well in my mind it's her desire but maybe it's just hormones somehow I think it's a bit of both

I do lift her once a day to grab that green egg tgat she gets daily from some sister. I was thinking she can be worse if they hatch as far as friendliness goes

Thanks for the tip about looking earlier I better make sure to get her enclosedtoday for sure!

Rambita will be just as happy with one chick as she would with 6. My last broody only managed 1 out of 6 and she was a great mother, in fact she stayed with the chick for about 15 weeks.

I've decided to try and get 1 or 2 day old chicks if the eggs fail under my broody, like your Rambita I'd feel for my Doris too!! (I love chicken names!!) and it's obviously a great way to break the broody cycle.

Doris has kicked out another egg this morning, so we are down to 3 too.

I'll be watching for your posts Sunday/Monday, good luck Rambita :pop
