6 week chicken with blood in stool

I have 6 week old chickens but one has had blood in it's stool the last 2 days. It's a little sluggish and tired so definitely sick. This generally means coccidiosis but they are all having medicated feed. Apparently amprolium can be given in the water but what I want to know is does it matter if I give this on top of medicated feed? And do I give to all of them (theres six) or is there something better to treat it? I have been raising and looking after chickens for many years but haven't come across this one! It seems ridiculous to take to a vet as they charge around 80 just for a consultation. I'm in Australia BTW. Thanks and will wait for a helpful reply

Do you have a picture of the poop?

The amount of amprolium in chick feed is not enough to cure an outbreak. Feeding your chicks medicated feed will help prevent the onset of coccidiosis, but will not totally prevent it. Corid is quite safe, so feeding them the feed, and treating them at the same time should be no problem. You need to pick up some Corid oral solution, or powder form, and give them some of that. If you're in the AU, and can't find Amprolium, you could use Baycox, Bactrim, Coccivet, or Diclizuril.

For the sickest chick, drip a few drops of undiluted Corid along her beak to give her a jump start. Make sure to keep their pen clean, as coccidia thrive in wet damp environments, and make sure the treated water source is there only water source, and that the birds are given no vitamins during treatment as that may counteract corid effectiveness.

I would treat for possible coccidiosis with amprollium (Corid) as @Isaac 0 recommended. Always use the severe outbreak or maximum dosage.

Thanks so much for your help. I will try and get some amprollium today and treat them all. I clean out their brooder once or twice a day with a bleach solution. All poop with blood has been removed but if I get some more I will definitely post a picture. Good news is she seems quite a bit better this morning! Thanks again and keep in touch!

It probably isn’t necessary to bleach out your brooder daily. You cannot really disinfect coccidia with bleach. They will build up a tolerance of coccidia in the soil gradually and eventually with little bits of exposure. Just keep your brooder and their bedding as dry as possible, and change or add beeding as it gets soiled.
