6 week old Pekin can’t walk

Sounds like he’s off to a good start. Please keep us updated.

Good morning Miss Lydia!

Joe is standing a little and preening part of his body. He still cannot walk normal. I’m posting the video from this morning of how he walks. My husband is concerned on whether he will be able to live in the duck house and be in the run. We’re worried that he may never gain the ability to walk again. It has been one week since we started giving him the recommendations for niacin deficiency. He has definitely improved but can’t stand long or walk well.

Do you recommend giving him more time to heal?

Also, his partner quit picking on him, she has been cuddling with him the last couple of days. I took this as a good sign! 💗

Hugs!

Poor thing.

Having him exercise the legs is a good thing, but it might be best done in water, having him forced to walk on the grass like that can cause more damage. If you haven't already, I would set him in a little enclosure where feed and water are near, and do some water therapy once or twice a day to exercise the legs.

Given his age, total improvement may take over a month, so don't give up just yet.

At what dose are you giving him the B complex at?

Thank you Isaac!

You made my morning by saying not to give up. 💗

We have been doing water therapy once a day. We don’t make him walk, I only did it that one time to show you how he is doing.

I’m giving him 1ml of the B complex. Is that correct or should I give him more?

Thank you so very much for your help! You are a blessing!

Sounds like you're doing the most you can do. Keep giving the 1ml a day, and hopefully, we'll start seeing some more improvement soon. Once they're this old they can take a while to recover.

Thank you again! We love him so much, we’ll keep doing what we’re doing.

Isaac,

It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that Joe passed away this morning at 6:20am. It has been a very rough morning for all of us especially my 8 & 10 yr old daughters. 😭

His companion won’t let us leave her, she cries if we walk away from her. Will she be ok? We have a khaki Campbell duckling that is 13 days old, but Sophie is not ready to accept her yet.

Will Sophie be ok without Joe? She won’t pass away because of being lonely will she? She actually crawls up in my daughters lap and hugs her constantly, so she is very well loved but we are not her duck companion.

Thank you again for all of your help!
💗 Maria

Oh no, I'm so sorry, :hugs, you really did the best you could possibly do for her, sometimes they just don't make it.

Ducks are very social creatures, and as you mentioned, it's hard for them to share the instincts they have attained with humans. Really, the best thing would be to get her another friend.
