6 Week Old Pullet Smells Bad *Update: Cocci or Coryza?*

My mother has promised- Feed store and sulmet tomorrow afternoon on our way home from the church. These chickies shall have Sulmet tomorrow! and I mean it this time. Also, chickens carry Cocci and Coryza forever?

Coccidia, no...Coryza, I'm not sure. I will try and research and let you know. Most respiratory infections are for life. It might come back in times of stress and you would have to treat again.

I found two wounds on Petrie's leg. They were small and equally sized, and about a half inch apart and about 1/4 of a cm around each. Was she just pecked? And also, her crop feels bumpyish. Like she ate some bigger rocks. Is this normal? I worry way too much about things.

The right side of Petrie's breast feels like a golf ball... Is that her crop? I gave her her own feed (non-medicated, mother insists that's the problem. Oh and we got Sulmet.) and she ate like she hadn't eaten in weeks :hmm The right side of her breast feels wayy harder and bigger than the rest of them. Impacted crop?

The stretching and twisting her neck around is how the 'rearrange' the contents of their crop. That isn't a problem. Now, as far as the golfball. That's not unusual either. Mine are like that all the time. When it is a concern is if they get off the roost in the morning and it is still big and hard. Put her to bed tonight and get up early tomorrow and check out her crop. If it is still big and hard, impacted crop...if it is down, she is just a pig :)

Medicated feed is not the problem...but, I shouldn't go against your mom. All medicated feed has in it is a low dose of medication designed to help chicks fight coccidia. It is a low dose. That's why it doesn't always work.

Okay, thank you. I just gave them some Sulmet and some Milk Kefir. :D Petrie gave me a dark green, watery poo. But that was when I was freaking about her crop and rubbing it downwards. XD

Update on Petrie: Her crop was empty this morning. I hand fed her, then I saw a hawk circling so I put her in my jacket. The crows took care of the hawk (they do that here. I love crows now.), so I let Petrie out of my jacket and fed her more. Then I put a bowl of medicated feed in the coop, and once the other three were up I took down the ladder. I will change the Sulmet water at noon today, when I finish my schoolwork. Petrie seems to be feeling better, as she has WAY better posture now. Tail up, head in normal position, running around, flapping, etc.

Yeah for you and Petrie :)

I'm so glad that she is feeling better and I'm sure that you are, too!
