6 wk old cockerel trying to mate with the back of my head, and it hurts!

After cross posting, and reading the other advice, I do realize that my advice is more directed towards hen behavior. I would do what the other rooster advisers have suggested and be more stern and not so gentle as I would a happy-go-lucky hen.

Oh dam I was liking your advice! A gentler approach
To be fair I'm not 100% he's a he
My other two cockerels are much lighter ( cuckoo maran) he's dark like the hens but has a red face and bits( I've totally forgot the name of the bit on its head!) that's M.E. For you

I don't mean to sound rude, but ...YUCK! I don't think you should be letting him beak your mouth. Aren't they supposed to carry salmonella as well as other diseases? If your health is at all compromised you need to be extra careful.

Cockerel or not, this behavior is not acceptable. No one is advocating violence against your bird - what is being suggested is proper discipline to prevent the little one from becoming a bigger, more serious problem capable of doing even more damage to you (or anyone else) - whether it proves to be a hen or a rooster.
Are you meaning the wattles/comb/earlobes?

I wouldn't be mean or hurt a young cockerel, either. He is only six weeks old and still young and impressionable. The sooner you let him know that jumping on your head and picking at your hair isn't acceptable, the better. I wouldn't want a big rooster on my head, nice or not, lol! ;)

By being more stern, I didn't mean that you should bully him or hurt him. Sorry if that was implied in how I wrote.

Go ahead and keep cuddling him on your lap. We do that with ours.

I have ME, too, and my EE flies up to me everytime I sit to rest, which is a lot. I'm beginning to think she is a cockerel, due to fluffing and chest bumping my LB cockerel. But she has always been very interested in being on me and recently that has included wanting to be on my head. She did the teeth and eye peck, too, but I kept telling her no and turning away. It works, but you have to a very firm 'no' and consistent.
I do the same when she starts eyeing the top of my head. I need to be more consistent about that after reading the advice here - sometimes it is easier to have her up there and have one hand free for opening doors. My LB takes an entire arm these days! They are both 6 weeks.
Is yours easy to get off your head? If you always move him off and them "man-handle" him by holding his body firmly and turning him upside down - pretend you have to inspect his feet or vent - and then put him down gently, he will get the message that you are boss-lady. Keep us posted!!

Hi thank you I was thinking all three just couldn't get it, I kept think crown!
I do realise your not advocating violence, I realise your suggestions are very sensible
And fairer on the cockerel too, because if I can't control him I can't keep him

I'm just a bit soft when it comes to animals, but I won't let him get away with it,
I'm going to put them to bed now its 9.30 pm
And tomorrow I'm going to toughen up a bit and stop him attacking my head

I don't want his beak in my mouth, I just forget and talk and he's so quick I get a peck before I can move
I'm paranoid about salmonella have more disinfectant hand wash than the hospitals!
I'm lucky immunity wise, some people with M.E. Get everything going
Some don't get anything( I think because my immune system is constantly switched on thinking its attacking a virus I don't have) I don't get ill
Saing that I'm constantly ill because of the symptoms from my over active immune system
If that makes sense!

Hey, Pinkaboo,
How is it going with your cockerel?

REAlly well, I've avoided kneeling with my back to him when I clean the coop
When he sits on my knee I keep him on my knee and don't let him come up to my face, trouble is once he jumps up the other want to and my knees aren't big
Enough so the odd time he has ended up on my chest or shoulder but been perfectly lovely, he just wants to cuddle up and sleep
The other hens and two cockerels like to peck( ouch) I had cut off jeans on yesterday and they have shredded them beautifully for me!
Its funny when the three cockerels were 4/5 weeks they would play fight, run up chests out, stare each other out , but now 7 wks they don't seem to do it anymore, mind you its better than a child's playground on the run!
