6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

So there is a major storm heading into my area on Thursday and Friday - forcast is for wind gusts above 60 mph and "widespread power outages". I need to decide if I should set the eggs at noon on Thursday and just hope we don't loose power or wait until the storm passes and set them late. Has anyone had any experience loosing power during the first couple days of incubation?

It was a HAL 9000

Sorry Dave I can't do that.

Haha haha

Yep, need to charge the battery for my backup unit!

I want to hatch some eggs out for NYD!! Wanted to hatch some ducks, but realize I should've already set them. Lol so looks like I'll be setting some of my chicken eggs. My hens just started laying. They layed their first two eggs on Thanksgiving day. There are 15 hens and 3 roosters in the pen. Would it be worth it to try to incubate them? I have seen the top roo "playing" with a couple of the hens

Yes, I covered the incubator with foil and then a towel to keep in the heat. Ours was out for several hours and if I remember right, the temp got down in the 80's and the eggs were fine and just hatched a little late.

It is real stressful though, so I hope your power stays on. I don't know how the storm is supposed to affect us, but if I join in I think I will use my Silkie who just went broody a few days ago. The hard part is deciding whether to give her Silkie, Golden Cuckoo Marans or d'Anver eggs.

I'm still planning on incubating a couple duck eggs with the chickens eggs ( if that's possible) the chickens will just hatch about a week sooner. Anyone advise against hatching chicken and duck eggs together? Reasons why?

No clue, but the movie is 2001: a space odyssey part two is 2010: the year we make contact

We are totally living in the future!
Wasn't that a HAL 2000?
It's (he's?) HAL 9000. But we all know what (who?) you meant.

Sorry what's HAL?.... Other than the crazy computer from the movie 2001 a space odyssey...

I was confused about that at first too, lol !
Maybe I'll name one of the chicks that hatch for this, my first HAL, "Hal 2015"!
