6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Did you see my post? Now who else is waiting??

Well, I am. I've got 20 eggs lost-in-transition...haven't had the call from our Post Office yet and USPS tracker shows that one batch of eggs is having a leisurely stroll through Texas. However, I did set some local farmers market eggs for the contests.

Congrats on getting your eggs!

I'm so happy! My girls rewarded me for waiting until evening to set. Magnus gave me another lovely SFH egg and Lulu gave me another perfectly normal Lavender Orpington egg to set!

So I let the shipped eggs rest for 5 hours and then got them all set at 5:30 yesterday evening. The SFH eggs I won on eBay look to be in the best shape (air cell wise) that I have ever gotten in shipped eggs. So I am really hopeful for them.

I'm going to leave them still and not turn today, and do a quick check on the air cells in the morning. If they have firmed up then I'll commence turning.

BBS = Black, Blue or Splash. You can get any combination when breeding Blue Ameraucanas together. :) There's BBS in several breeds I know of..Marans for one.

I might be in for this year. I say might because a power outage may have knocked me out already, but the older eggs made it, so fingers crossed I see life in these two eggs. I have set two eggs from my project chickens, and I may set some quail, if my female coturnix cooperates and lays me some in time!
This early, the eggs will just go back to as suspended state. They may hatch a couple of hours late but they will be fine!

Will the eggs I set this afternoon count toward the hatch-a-long?

Eggs will count!
Ron, what is the cut off date for setting eggs for the HAL?

Saturday is the cut off date. Just send a pm with the new total.

I'm out. Already.

I had been collecting eggs for a few days since so few are laying. We ran out of eating eggs so on Wednesday I bought some organic eggs at the grocery store. I told my wife I bought them cause we would be low on ours for a bit. I had been putting them on the back porch each day since it stays about 40F and humid out there.
Yesterday I turned a heater on in the porch to slowly raise the temperature. Overnight, I brought them in to warm up more. They were on the kitchen table in a small 2 qt. bucket. I go in to get a cup of coffee this morning and there the eggs are in the sink - washed.

She never washes the eggs and there were a dozen eggs sitting in the egg tray in the fridge.

Set them anyway!

Okay so putting my LG 'bator in a box isn't the best idea then so I won't take the chance. What about draping a shirt over the 'bator to keep the too much heat from escaping, especially in the cold evenings? That should still allow for airflow, right?

I thought I was done hatching for awhile.. but it looks like one of my hens has other ideas. I went out to the barn yesterday to find my silkie x cochin hen sitting on eggs. She has brooded for me before and she's definitely committed to hatching some more. I just looked at my calendar and noticed that her eggs will be due to hatch on new years day. I figured there must be a hatch-a-long for that, so here I am! I think she has about 8 eggs. I will have to confirm that whenever I happen to see her off the nest. Good luck to everyone else that's hatching!

Send me a pm when you know the number. I will add yours to the list then. I would need to know by Monday--so I can get the contest winner figure out. The contest information is in the first post.
Sorry guys, I'm out. I only got one egg to set for this HAL. I will see y'all for the next one, or three!

Good luck to everyone!

I am so sorry!
The P.O just called. Doing the happy dance..trying..to do...the happy dance.

You could wrap the sides with cardboard, just don't cover the air holes, both top and bottom. Make sure air can get under it.
Great tip!

morning lil eggys tilted bator at a rock steady 99.5 with 30 humidity one thermomature is just a smidge over 99.5 it's the farthest egg.. should I rotate the eggs in the egg carton to give the eggs chance to shift in different area's? I am using the circular wedge I drilled out of the bator to insert the light fixture.. is that enough "tilt" to shove under one end or the other of the egg carton?
