6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Yes, as in move them around the incubator--re arrange them. That helps even out cold and hot spots. It also helps with air exchange.

Turning them from one side to the other is three or more times a day.

I am posting to avoid confusion for those reading to learn--I am sure you know all this stuff.
yes have read ton on it but I swear I feel like I havent read anything on anything now that I am actually doing it.........second guessing myself, it's distracting lol I was just tilting the egg carton by putting a wedge of Styrofoam under one end then the other that is not right? do I need to shift them in their same egg carton spot as well as tilt? but every other day I move them around in the egg carton for different spots......add all the different information and different methods of doing it on top of it it's enough to wanna yank your hair out.... and tytytytytytytytty so much for your patience and putting up with all my questions and everything.

I really do like using the modified egg carton to hold the eggs in the bator btw, I dont have to worry over them shifting and moving and bumping round and they just seem better maintained

I thought I was done hatching for awhile.. but it looks like one of my hens has other ideas. I went out to the barn yesterday to find my silkie x cochin hen sitting on eggs. She has brooded for me before and she's definitely committed to hatching some more. I just looked at my calendar and noticed that her eggs will be due to hatch on new years day. I figured there must be a hatch-a-long for that, so here I am! I think she has about 8 eggs. I will have to confirm that whenever I happen to see her off the nest. Good luck to everyone else that's hatching!

Can't you just pick her up to get a quick count? That's what I usually do. Of course the girls get a bit miffed but a few new scars on my hands and wrists won't hurt anything.

Send me a pm when you know the number. I will add yours to the list then. I would need to know by Monday--so I can get the contest winner figure out. The contest information is in the first post.

I prefer not to bother her more than I have to.. but I'll pick her up to get a count and mark eggs this afternoon. She kept laying for several days after she went broody last time and we had a staggered hatch. I'd like to avoid that this time.

Oh yes...I decided to use a carton to hold my eggs steady too.
Amberjem...I completely understand your frustration, I'm in no way am expert but have read up on hatching and still I'm nervous anxious and constantly checking here and the bator for changes and info. Bator is upstairs so u can picture me running up the stairs down the stairs...repeat at least 6 times an hour.

Lol!

As long as the vents are not covered, it would be fine.

Yes, add to the worksheet for hatching!

Okay, vents are not covered. I've also re-vamped my incubation worksheet for download. I converted it to pdf to make it easier to download, fit regular paper sizes and use. Unfortunately, I don't have the 20 bucks right now for the Golden Feather Membership so I can't do attachments.

The Chicken Farmer's Complete Spreadsheet Suite a.k.a. CFCSS is coming along though!

As soon as I can figure out how to get it on here in its new form, I'll post it. Also, I'll need to figure out how to get the actual spreadsheet attached too so that everyone will be able to use it.

Well, I am. I've got 20 eggs lost-in-transition...haven't had the call from our Post Office yet and USPS tracker shows that one batch of eggs is having a leisurely stroll through Texas. However, I did set some local farmers market eggs for the contests.

Congrats on getting your eggs!

Sorry, but glad you have some to play along. My tracking stopped in the state they came from, didn't see anything until this morning that they were in our state. Then our town. They are so busy right now. Went to get them, looong line in the P.O.
