6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I'm looking for Ameraucanas I'm WV (or someone willing to ship chicks to WV) too!!
Want to get rid of a few of the wheaten Ameraucana/Ameraucana crosses that hatch?
What is BBS?
X2
Might be interested in some silkies. Has anyone ever had sizzles go broody?
I think u got the same interpretation I did LOL

We have a black Sizzle hen that has gotten VERY broody twice so far. Just so happened that we didn't have any eggs for her to sit on at those times. Hopefully next time we can take her up on it though. My bantam Cochins and Cochin/Silkie mix hens have been great with being broody mamas.

I tried covering mine & that was how I ended up with the spikes that killed everything. I found it was much better to let the daytime or peak temp hit about 102-103 & not even worry about the drops. The only thing I noticed was, depending on how low & how long the drops were, it could throw hatch day behind by 2-5 days.
Around here, fb typically stands for a "partner" that you only have for 1 reason...lol
Wow, just wow!

New Contest added!

7. Best Hatch Rate using a Broody
Prize:
6 NH hatching eggs plus 6+ Sex link hatching eggs courtesy of @tommysgirl

This contest is for eggs hatched under a broody hen. Send @ronott1 a pm letting him know how many you will have cooking. We'll need that info
by the 3rd of Jan at the latest
to be included in the contest. When the hatch is over,
you'll take a pic and post it to show us how many
you actually hatched.
The picture must be of sufficient quality to count all the chicks.
In the event of a tie, the one who hatches the most chicks wins.

Send me a pm if hatching under a brody.
shouldn't the number of eggs cooking be in by this Saturday instead of after the HAL is officially over on the 1'st?

I just got a call from home. The eggs for the HAL are here but the bottom of the box is wet...I have a bad feeling about this shipment....

*the'regonnabeokay...they'regonnabeokay...they'regonnabeokay* just keep saying that and hope!

I love how there are so many spaces for hens and one for the rooster.

Hahaha... Such optimism. ;)

LOL yeah, well, I was sort of thinking of breeding programs with one sire per incubator when I made it. And I read somewhere that 1 rooster can service up to 20 hens. Of course, I was always taught that more than a 12:1 HRR was all you'd want. My dad was always very strict about that so that's really what I go with but I figured, why not? Others probably will do up to 20:1 HRR so I'll give them room for it.

I have 10 separate pens. They dont all get to roam. I have to many things around here that killed or steal chickens. I like to turn them out in the afternoons 3 or so now about 2 hours before they go to bed. That I fine they do not wander to far from home....
I am not sure if this year I can let them out my new neighbors let their bird most Rooster stay out all the time..
Now the chickens I want as purebred stay in all of breeding season..
Brahmas
white marans
cream crested legbars
amerucana
salmon favs
wheaten marans their getting old
cochin bantams mixed color
cochins barbed bantam
brown leghorns
oh darn I have way too many chickens......
a few mixed breeds that run around ...
I wish they could be trained to stay with their own breed it would be a lot simpler LOL
Wow, that's a lot of pure breeds. Are you a commercial breeder or just lonely? lol

I have a separate hatching incubator and last year I used the egg cartons in it and it was Great..... it is nice when they hatch and climb around on the un-hatched eggs, they don't move and it is not as messy. I do cut the cartons in half so I can space the eggs out. I do make a point to use the card board cartons, don't know that it makes a difference.
x2 ~ I incubate in my Octagon 20 ex advance and hatch in my Genesis 1588.

I have used both the paper and foam cartons and haven't seen a difference. I do cut down the edges of the cartons so it is easier for the chicks to climb out.

I already ran into a problem with the eggs I put under my first time Silkie broody. She is small and I noticed she wasn't covering them all so I took 3 away and put them in with the Marans eggs that are in the incubator. She will get all the chicks once the hatch.

What is keeping me distracted from wanting to candle eggs already :p
That and laundry, lol

This is one huge RIR egg. It touches the turner just the slightest at the end of each turn. I hope it's just a big egg and not a double.

My favorite candling light is my Samsung cell phone flash light. I just be quick because it does warm up. But it's super bright and small. Works better than any other kind of flashlight I've tried. I'm too cheap to buy an actual candling light.
