6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

That's a pic of me I played with in a program...
I actually don't have much Of my art given most of it away or sold it and some of it's not PG
Here's one

And here's a doodle lol

The doodle is awesome! I have no artsy talent, your lucky.

Cynthia12 your pic of the yorky is too cute. My mom's tried to chase my birds, they ran for a second and then decided she was small enough to stalk across the yard. Lol

Hello CNNbuck,
If the eggs in the setting hen nest are less than 3 days attendant you may add whatever amounts to a full clutch. What size and breed is your setter? The fact is that the started eggs will slowly slow down development and the added eggs will speed up a bit resulting in a clutch that will just about even out at hatching time. The developing chicks actually communicate with each other toward the end of the incubation period by a coded, DNA controlled clicking pattern. They peck the interior shell walls audibly. This way you will reap more chicks and not waste your valuable broody hen's time. We saw this phenomenon time and again when I was in the Poultry Science Department at university. And the babies seem none the worse foe wear for the experience.
Have fun,
Neal, the Zooman, (zoologist, ret.)

P.S. If anybody wants to discuss this interesting event or any other animal science/zoological topic I can be reached at any time: 1 (209) 327-2068.

That is way way cool! Like Morse Code?
I will candle mine on Thursday for the first time. I will have to check the shipped eggs tomorrow for seeping though.

For now I am

myself to stay away from the eggs!
I've found that handcuffs and a chair bolted to the floor works. lol

6664116

@michaelf Has an NPIP certified flock too!

Thanks!
On the off chance that I don't win the random post, how much would it cost me to buy some of them???

It looks like a clear.

I wait until day 10 to pull clears.

Sorry, I meant a post that was one that fit the thread. Not posting "ditto" or the like. It is great to run the post numbers up but it makes some angry and we want everyone to be happy on the hatch a long.

I might make the next random post a funny post contest but on a separate thread.

Cheers!

From the Bathroom Readers Digest:

Actual court transcript
Attorney: Doctor, as a result of your examination, is the girl pregnant?
Doctor: The girl is pregnant, but not as a result of my examiniaton.

I think that would be great. What's the plan to get the crests on them? Just curious as to how you'll get there.
The bigger chick in my avatar is my Olive Egger, and she has a teeny crest, so I'm going to go from there. I only hatched two olive eggers out the 9 eggs I got ( and the other one was a male). So, right now I only have her to start with.

I'm thinking of breeding a Polish hen to a blue egg layer, hopefully Araucana, (I absolutely adore the Araucana, but I've had so much trouble finding eggs right now). Hopefully, that will produce a crested chicken that lays a light blue egg. Then breed that one back to a dark egg layer. I have some Cuckoo Marans, but I don't really like the cuckoo color. I just sold my Welsummers, but now I wish I hadn't, as I just found out that a partridge bred to a blue would produce sex-linked chicks. I think I want to get some other color of Marans, maybe Black Copper or Birchen. Then pair the offspring of that second breeding, which should be an OE, to my wee-crested OE. I want to eventually get a Crested OE that will 'breed true', so to speak. I've been looking up information about OEs, and I'm still not sure if OE to OE is more or less likely to lay an olive colored egg. I've been trying to find a picture of the mystical "Avocado" egg, but my attempts have been fruitless (pardon the lame pun XD) . I might toss in an Isbar, too. The Marans/Isbar (Marbars) OE eggs I've seen are amazing.

I want not only an Olive egg, but a particular appearance as well. I need to study chicken genetics to make a definite plan. It may not work, or it may take several attempts to get the look I want, but, heck, I have lots of time, and I thought it might be a fun project. I just decided to do this a few months ago, so don't have a plan set-in-stone and any advice or suggestions are welcome and helpful. Sorry, that was a whole lot of explaining when basically the answer is, "not sure yet". lol! :)

well I tried candling a store bought egg and a egg violet laided 7 days ago not much luck on finding air cell either my light is to dim or not much air cell in em ghrmmmmmmmmmmmmm maybe I will utube air cells get an idea better what I am trying to see

I did the same thing...no luck on the store bought eggs, but I did manage to see the air cell on a 3'ish week old egg from a local dozen that I bought. So, I've seen it in one egg now. I'm gonna try the store bought again tomorrow as I had already put them away when I got the older one out. But it was smaller than I thought and I really had to move the light around until it popped out. Once it popped out, it was fairly obvious. (I hope that makes sense)

Sounds like a plan to me. You like me have what you have and have to work from there.
