6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I like this LOL.

My roosters sometimes get up a bit too early

. Not always though most mornings about 6am. I cant hear them much from inside the house.

On the other hand my goat is in heat and boy oh boy a goat in heat is something else. The sound of a "dying" goat shrilling through the air is VERY LOUD early in the AM. Im sure neighbors LOVE it

LOL I just remembered my old youtube account where I had loaded some vids.  Here's one of our geese.  It's called "Not cleared for landing"  *hint* *hint*

LOVE this!! What beautiful birds. Yes, I know I'm about a bagel lion posts behind.

I am currently hiding from the grand kids trying to catch up on these posts..... I'm really not that good if a hider.

I saw this on facebook and had to share. I think everyone knows this.

And the electric bill with all the heat lamps lol.

I just cut my feed bill down after processing all the Thanksgiving turkeys and extra roosters. Luckily I have 2 more turkeys and 3 more roosters that are going soon. This way as I start hatching come Spring I wont notice the feed bill going back up (well at least DH wont notice the feed bill going back up lol)

Finally caught up!!

Happy birthday @Book!!

After all the chatter in here about candling, I did mine tonight. Glad I did.
Don't ask what I was (or wasn't) wearing, you likely don't want to know :p

The iPhone camera worked beautifully!! Much better on the dark eggs than my LED torch (except a few that were still too dark).
Pulled 4 blood rings, left in a few questionables that aren't obvious risks and was happy to see veining and progress in 15 eggs, some even moved!!
I know Ron suggested leaving eggs in until they smell or leak, but I can't risk this hatch for the sake of a few eggs (which were obvious blood rings).

I'm incubating Barnevelder eggs that were posted across the country and not a cheap loss if I lose them all to an exploding egg. I started with 34 set, but pulled out 11 weepers in the first few days. I'm happy with seeing 15 definitely progressing, possibly more, because my last lot of Barnevelder's set had so many infertiles.

Only two weeks to go!!

What's wrong with cheating
wink.png
?

I once had an egg explode in my incubator. I noticed it sweating, but for some reason I didn't take it out right away. About an hour later....Moral of the story: Take sweating (seeping, oozing, stinking, etc) eggs out immediately!

By the way, is that a Shiba Inu in your avatar doing agility? That must have taken persistence and/or patience! Color me impressed. I can't even get my Shiba to come when I call without bribing him with cheese (and sometimes even that doesn't work). LOL!

Nothing wrong with cheating. It was just my personal goal to wait. Plus, I've been really busy. My alarm didn't go off this morning and I overslept an hour and a half. I'm only on here because I'm eating breakfast. Just had 2 cancellations due to the rain! My day got easier.

I just started incubating this year, so exploding eggs was a new concept for me. It didn't sweat or seep and didn't have much of a smell. Since it was under a turkey for who knows how long, I wasn't sure if it was smelling from rott or poo.

Yes! That's a Shiba Inu. That's Quick. He's my 3rd Shiba and #4 is in training (although she may never be reliable enough to trial). I'll brag on Quick. He has his ADCH and was 2 QQ from his MACH when I retired him (his choice). He's now 2 Chances Q's from his NATCH, but at almost 12 years, he's decided to run agility his way, so I doubt we'll get it. Plus, those elite chances are so hard and we don't get to play NADAC too much. Sorry you asked? I love talking about Quick and all my dogs. Post a pic of your Shiba.

Good morning everyone. Hope everyone's candling goes well over the next few days. :fl
There have been some studies and Brinsea has added it to their advance incubators as an option. From day 8 to 18, the eggs are cooled down. The studies showed that two hours were ideal. If you have a regular incubator, you turn it off for two hours while you do chicken chores. Of course the benefit is lost if you forget to turn it back on... The cool down cycle will make the chicks stronger that hatch and will get you one more chick per hatch usually.
Ron, I just wanted to Thank You for always being such an amazing teacher (and enabler). You never fail to have an easy-to-understand answer and some encouraging words for anyone who needs it. Thank You :bow (and do you ever sleep?)

Here is my red neck candler! The flashlight came from Home Depot it has 900 lumens. I took a can of green beans and cut the top off, feed the beans to the chickens, and cut a 1 1/2" hole in top with a circle cut drill bit. The egg sits perfectly in the hole. It works great. ETA: please pardon my mess in my junk room. My DW saw me posting the picture and did I should be ashamed. I was like why it's my junk and I'm proud of it lol. She was still not pleased :/
Great candler! (And your "junk" room is 10x cleaner than my office )
Sooo I candled them all...aaaannd....ALL of them show good veins and what I hope are good sized air cells!!!!:celebrate :weee :ya First time hatcher, so far so good!
:celebrate Congrats! That is awesome!
I may have hatched 35 years ago today! :)
Happy Birthday!!!
I think I might be in the running for worst hatch rate. 3 with veins 4 questionable and seems at this time 17 clears. I think I need to talk with Rocky (aka roo)!!! My buff eggs seem to all be clear. Rocky tends them but I'm wondering if they are still to young? They started laying the end of July beginning of August. My past 3 hatches almost all the eggs were fertile. Not sure if something is up with Rocky. Maybe because 15 hens are too much for him? He tends them all but by my candling says different.
Bummer :(
