6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Remind me again about the egg storage. I know keep cool and tilt every so often. But more details please. Last year I was told tilting was not important.
Links to prior posts are fine as I tend to skip posts when the thread moves rapidly. Please tag or quote me though since I do have this skipping habit. I'm sure someone will come up with a fee for skipping soon.
For the first 14 days of storage, They should be in a cool room that has some humidity. Turning is recommended and it is easier to do if you tilt the eggs in an egg flat big end up.

After 14 days they do better if they are in cold storage--with the small end up. They do not need to be turned then. a bit of humidity would help so a mini fridge set ad 40 to 45 or a wine cooler would work best. Frost free refrigerators are not the best for them.

I have mine in a 53-56 degree area. I think there is humidity but I'll hang a wet towel to be sure. The eggs are in egg setting trays with one side resting on an opened egg carton.
I know my area that needs the most improving is the changing of the tilt. I get distracted and forget to move the egg carton to the other side. I wonder if I could plug in an egg turner for the 7 days I collect eggs.

Hi Sally, I fixed my post. The first 14 days are big end up and after 14 days small end up.

When I was out tending to my chickens this morn, the broody jumped off her nest and to my sad eyes I saw she has pooped on her eggs

I really hope it doesn't affect them. Fingers crossed bacteria doesn't enter the eggs and make the chicks die

Brush off as much as you can without "rubbing" the eggs (you don't want to push the bacteria in); with luck they wont have a problem

I have 4 black/black bantam cochin and 4 silver/gold laced wyandotts, so I am really excited to see what I get. I just had 2 black/black bantam cochins hatch Sunday and this is what I got. Somehow it has white and almost looks mottled. I guess we will see as it grows, it's still the cutest, tiniest little thing. I can't wait to hopefully have 4 more at new years. I also have a few in the bator for a Christmas hatch next week that are doing great.
Yea for growing eggies! and those chicks are adorable! ( l LOVE bantam cochins - they are so little, and those fluffly feet!

Good tip about the "frost free"; I wouldn't have even thought of that.

If I had candled them, I would have found that about 15 of 24 are already showing veins...I would have been very excited....
And I would have been very excited for you! ;)
