6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Happy holidays, everyone and Merry Christmas. Well, I'm down in my chair. Eaten too much , visited too much, too much noise and I'm done for the day. Had a wonderful time and ready for a nice well earned rest. Santa was extra good to me. One of my favorite presents was a black and white polka dot pair of half rubber boots. Perfect!!!!

Not to be a downer on Christmas, Ron, but today is day 8 on my eggs and I left the top off for way to long. Almost 4 hrs. It's hot in my room so it got down to 70 and stayed with humidity of 37%.. Have I damaged them? Hope not!!!!

I forgot to plug in the incubator after the cooling period this morning.

It'll be a X-Mas Miracle if any of these eggs make it! LOL!

It seems Santa is encouraging my new chicken habit...

Just in time to set up my brooder.

And as I put together the last minute needs for my first hatch, I'm wondering what everyone feeds their new chicks...
medicated or non-medicated chick feed? What about some of the vitamin supplements/probiotics like Gro-gel Plus or Quik Chik? Just want to make sure I'm prepared!

Great Christmas gift

Your very lucky!

As for feed, I shop at Tractor Supply. I get either Chick Starter/Grower crumbles 20%protein (non-medicated) but most often I get the Chick Starter crumbles 24% protein (also non-medicated). I like to feed a higher protein feed.

Non-medicated is just my personal preference, also I do not add any extra supplements or gro-gel etc. Again personal preference.

Congrats on the new babies! They are adorable.

Perfect!

Medicated feed treats cocci, so if you do not have it at your place, you do not need it.

We've never had chickens but our farm has been a farm since the mid 1800s, how do I know if we have it here? Does it lay dormant in the soil?

It's still snowing here! We have around 3 ft. of snow now. I just went out and put a heat lamp in for my girls. The EE that is getting close to laying was just sitting up on the edge of a nest box. All fluffed up, looked at me like, I'm not moving. For the rest of the night! This photo here? No way my chickens would go into it.

3 ft...OMG...that's a white Christmas!
