6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Okay. I did a final-final candle tonight. I have 14 out of 15 with definite movement inside! I am so happy and relieved

! I was so worried after the accidental 6-hour cooling yesterday. It IS an X-mas Miracle! The air cells are still kind of small, though. One of the eggs even sank when I float tested it. I have the humidity at 35%, should I reduce it further? Or wait on adding water in the lockdown period?

I know you are not supposed to count your chicks before they hatch, but what about naming them?

I had one moving around like crazy when I candled, and I said, "This one is moving around like a bear!". I don't know where that simile came from, but, if that chick hatches, I'm naming it Bear!

The eggs should slightly tilt up for lockdown. It is not so much that they will pip at the wrong end but that they may pip into a vein or liquid when the internally pip--pip the membrane several days before hatching.

Thank you for answering all my questions...it has been very helpful! I think I am definitely in the anxious stage...

Uh-oh. The bator is dwindling in occupants. Pulled two more clear BLRW and the 12 EE eggs.... all just white and yolks.

And what's left in the Brinsea incubator isn't looking too swell. I have 7 eggs remaining and in those I saw movement in only 3... One I almost chucked because it was weeping and has a horrible deep saddled air sac, BUT the chick inside kicked....don't know what to make of it. Will use some TLC. There's one viable BLRW and then the RIR-cross farmers market egg is still bobbing and waving. The rest, I fear, are filler eggs. So I'm thinking I may have just 2 out of 41. And it's a split hatch, so will have chicks three days apart.

OOOh...now I am scared to candle my eggs. I still had 17 Trader joes eggs and 7 Blue Australorp eggs developing...

Sorry you lost more!

The EE's were impossible to candle, so didn't know really what was going on inside. However, the air cell hadn't budged since Day 7 candling and this time around they had that wonderful barren glow. These were farmers market eggs, anyway, and just confirmed my suspicions that the sellers would say anything to get their eggs sold. Just 1 out of the 23 set of the farmers market eggs is in the running and, actually, has the best embryo of my 3 viable eggs.

TJ's eggs.... easy to candle! Bet you have a banner hatch.
