6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Went to bed last night with ONE pip showing on about 59 eggs..got up this morning and there are at least 15 pips that I can see, so just to kill a little time before I rack up another fine and peek again, I check on the still incubating younger eggs I put in the home made test incubator to keep until I can move them back into my Little Giant "nyd hatchers"

Well, I have some eggs in there that are needing to be candled, so I take one of my TEN new flashlights and start to candle...and WHAT?? holy cow! One of the eggs that is supposed to hatch in two weeks is PIPPED!

No way..so I check the date on the egg and I'm a dummy. I put one of my New Year's eggs in the test incubator instead of the hatcher...Ugh! So I slipped it into the hatcher and am hoping for the best!

I'm at work and I WANNA GO HOME!!!!!
That had to give you a heart attack!

SURPRISE!

The first week is 95 and then it goes down 5 degrees a week until 6 weeks and then they do not need heat.

If you are using a light, use a thermometer and get the area under the light to 95. out side of the light, it will be cooler. The chicks will move from cool to the warm as they need too.

Okay thanks, I was thinking it was 90 for week one then down 10 degrees each week until week 6.

Congrats on the 16 total pips!!! That's awesome news!!!

Still no pips, but I did see wiggling around! After removing the water from the channels, and adding dishes instead, the humidity is not going above 50% hmm...
dunno how fast your bator recovers humdity but you can do a paper towel twisted ad wick it in the container to raise humidity a bit.. for myself less paper towel raised it just right a half sheet raised it to high lol took like a 2 inch by 2 inch piece of paper towel twisted to get the humidity at 65%

Start at 95 and go down 10 a week.

I use Brinsea eco glow hot plates But before that I used heat lamps. I am convinced that they can be cooler than that though. With the brooder plate, the often stop using it after three weeks.

It took me all morning to catch up on the posts overnight. Congrats on all the chicks and pips!

@Amberjem - lay off the coffee or we're going to have to send paramedics!

@tommysgirl - I'm sooo glad your broody got at least 1 hatch out of the "cereal box" eggs!

@bamadude - what's the fine for candling at the request of a 3 year old? I *may* have had to peek since there were no pips (ETA - no External pips) and she saw all the chicks pictures posted; and we *may* have seen an internal pip moving

Now I'm off to clean the coops and anything else I can think of to keep my hands off that bator

The report from home is that we are up to 4. 2 barred rocks and 2 barn yard mutts, and 4 more pips at the moment! We need our one silkie egg to show a life.
