6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Last year Easter was later (April 20) and the thread was started on February 21st (how do I know..

..it is on my list of threads I posted to so I went and looked). If people are hatching emus (Yes, someone did last year for the EHAL) they need to be set 54 days before hatch date. If they are setting muscovies, those need to be set 35 days before hatch date. The word has to get out for poultry and chicken addicts lovers to get things lined up!!

Ill be joining in on the EHAL. So I will definitely be on the look out for the thread. Im looking forward to it and cant wait to get my eggs lined up.

He helps people who can't keep up with reading all the posts by doing a "news brief" each day. How is able to do it, I don't know, but he does an excellent job!

Oh..there you go, I answered before I got to that post..catching up. :)

Thanks both of you. had no idea about slipped hocks. Did some reading and this is definitely what he has, probably due to being malpostioned. That's too bad, he's really cute and full of life :( He doesn't seem to be in any pain and its already pitch black out with a foot of snow so I will have to wait until morning to go get the sharp garden shears out of the shed.(none of the scissors are sharp enough) Sorry there have are no pics yet, been really busy. The hatch just finished this morning with 24 out of 29. Soon to be 23 I guess. I DID take a whole bunch so they will be coming lol.

I have a question about my hatch. I know very little about chicken genetics and nothing about NN. My neighbor ordered NN last spring and has all NN hens and one rooster. For the HAL we traded and she gave me a dozen of her eggs. So I had 12 NN eggs and I marked them all. One did not hatch and one died a few hours after hatching. But now I only have 9 NN chicks. So does the trait not show up in all the offspring ? I think I know which one hatched out of the last egg and it is fully feathered brown and yellow.

If I got anything out of the Hal about NN's it was that you may end up with some who are not naked necked... Even if it's nn to nn...
Maybe I'm wrong though...

My hatch was12 out of 24. I think 8 of the non- hatchers are the fault of my inexperience and humidity fluctuations. I will take it for a first hatch and be very glad to have my 12 little fluffy butts. Ive got the bug now though and am looking forward to the EHAL.
