6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

ya mine dont seem to be really utilizing the heat lamp.. I have been turning it off during the day since two days ago..and they seem fine I turn it back on at night when I am not there monitoring it as regularly as I do during the day........but they dont seem overly stressed about it or anything they arent chirping more or huddling together because they are cold.........I dont know if it's cuz of the heat lamp or just growing but they sure have seemed to pop out with the feathers now like within 24 hours big difference.... mine dont peck at my hands they try to leap onto it lol...it's kinda interesting they seem to have an order when to be picked up.........I started noticing it maybe it's a pecking order thing I dunno........ but since I noticed they seem to be following the pattern.. I put my hand ion and one will jump up.. I'll handle em a bit cuddle spread their wings get them use to being touched and handled then put them back and the next one climbs onto my hand........

My little guy spends a lot of time out from under the plate and I was surprised as our house is generally 65. I'm cold! I don't know how he isn't!!

I went to the New England Poultry Congress yesterday and picked up two silkie chicks for my singleton. I can't tell you how happy he is now! He was active and playful and I kept things in the brooder for him to play with, but he is so content now. The two silkies bonded with him right away.

I also picked up 8 bantam cochin hatching eggs...which I set today at noon!! I'm a little surprised my husband is going along with my new hobby so well. But he is excited for the next hatch as well.

Fingers crossed this hatch goes better than my last!!

And as an added bonus...I found someone selling a young breeding pair of bantam cochins...a lemon blue cockerel and a brown red hen. I'm already smitten with these two.

I blame you all for really kick starting this new hobby and giving me the confidence to go forward!!! This HAL was so educational and helpful!

Glad you found some good things at the show. Did you go home with the breeding pair? Im really bummed I had to miss it since I had to unexpectedly work. Maybe next year I will make it out there.

Yep, they weren't entered into the show, just there for sale...

The brown red pullet...now named Lady Di

The lemon blue cockerel, now named Galileo.

To keep my husband happy, I let him name the roosters and he has chosen to stick to a famous astronomer theme. (My other rooster is Aristarchus and if the NYD HAL chick is a roo, his name is Copernicus.)

I'm sorry you didn't get to go to the show. It was a lot of fun. I think my friend and I giggled for the first hour we were there...I'm sure we looked like total newbies!! Just the noise, and the sheer number of chickens. We were ohh'ing and awe'ing at all the different breeds. But it was great and I will definitely go to future shows. Definitely a good place to learn and make good contacts.

We are going to watch American Sniper today--I will be back by 4pm Pacific time and will start working on the move then.

Anyone else have pictures of their NYD babies?

Do I have pictures?

This is just three shots of about 18 that I took yesterday.

I have more pictures of my chickens than I do of my wife, children and grandchildren. Is that bad?

I just took a few updated pics of my NYD broody and her one Silkie baby. Sorry for the red lamp light they are in the freezing garage.

They are feathering out nicely for you. Cute naked necks too!
