6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I had a unknown disease in my clock so I will not hatch in till April due to the fact that a chicken died from the disease, and I have had a sudden death to a chick although those fuzzy bundles would be fun to hatch, although I might due the Easter hatch-a-long

I am sorry to hear this!

In California we have a free Necropsy service that we can use provided by our State: cahfs.ucdavis.edu

It really helps us figure out if they died of something bad or not and how to correct the problem if there is one.

I would also suggest checking with your County Extension Office. They might be able to tell you about any diseases that may be present in your area.

Also, have you visited a show or another farm lately? It's possible that you carried something home from there and transmitted it to your flock.

Until you know what caused the deaths though, I would not plan on hatching again, not even in April. Otherwise, you may end up in the same situation again.

The last time that I was at a show was the county fair in the end of July, and before this weekend the last chicken pasted on Oct 9 and I plan on going to National Western Stock Show, I don't think that the two cases are related, but if any other chickens in the flock show signs I will not show at National Western, I do have my cickens separated for a science experiment on eggs that I get, but it might be Maraks, and I plan on joining the APA ABA youth poultry club. I will keep watching the flock to see what it is and I live in Colorado so to send the Necropsy or bird might be kinda hard

Frizz
On my way home today....and i have ALOT of catching up to do on here! LOL hope everyone had a great thanksgiving!

Im starting to collect eggs for a christmas hatch today...and hopefully my neighbor didnt miss the eggs under the broody....LOL shes supposed to hatch on christmas for me.

I have a few questions...
Since i dont have cadbury or marshie anywhere to hatch my "jappies" i think i will try to breed my "jappie" milkshake with my frizzle partridge silkie, timothy. That would make the babies 1/4 japanese bantam and 3/4 silkie. Not sure if i should do it because of the frizzle....anyone know if frizzle is recessive or dominant? I want to get as many frizzles as i can.
Milkshake is smooth feathered, and timothy is still silkie so will the chicks still come out smooth since silkied is a recessive trait?
400
theres timothy
400
milkshake

AND i just realized...timothy and milkshake hatched from last years NYD Hatch! Haha seemed like yesterday they just hatched!
frizzle is a unique recessive. You want 1 bird smooth bred with one frizzle to get more frizzle. You'll get 25 - 50% frizzle offspring from this. Do not cross frizzle with frizzle, you'll get a very curly feathered bird with very brittle feathers. And two smooth feather birds will basically never make a frizzle.

So I found a Muscovy sitting on 14 eggs last night. None have any veining yet, so either they aren't fertile or she just started sitting. Gonna steal some and put them in one of the bators. Probably won't get them to hatch on the first, but maybe, lol.

Lol for sure...my ducks did that. Only it was closer to thirty I found. Wasn't even sure how long they had been out there.
