6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Well my first test hatch is underway in my newly built cabinet incubator. Due the Monday before Thanksgiving, so I'll have time to make adjustments if needed and get her all cleaned back up before time to set NYD eggies. I set 75 of my own home eggs, was messing around changing water tray layouts and knocked a lav orp out of the tray and broke it (and of COURSE it had a live embryo in it!)

Was kicking myself for THAT fiasco! So now down to 74 eggs, 18 of which I have to check again in a few days, as I was unsure of them at day 7 candle. Half of those are all from a young OE pullet that I was unsure about setting because she hasn't been laying very long. Looks like my gut instinct was right on those!

It will be great having you hatch with us!

I am sorry to hear about the dropped egg too.

Got a trader joes bama? Or a health food store or farmers market... That is if you don't care what kind of chickens they are...
Yeah, those can be a great way to get some eggs to hatch if you like surprise chicks. I wish we had a place here that carried fertile eggs like that. I'd love to hatch a batch of mystery chicks.

I may have to go with mystery chicks this year....it's really cold and I don't feel like chicken coop every 20 minutes for an egg...

Dang hatching eggs are expensive

Shipping tends to be the priciest part for most eggs. Eliminate that and you can usually eliminate at least half the cost. If you can find an Alabama neighbor willing and able to save eggs for you to pick up you will save yourself money and your eggs will have a better chance of having a better hatch rate. Check out your state tread and see if anyone can help you out. If I was getting more eggs right now I would send you a bunch and just ask you to pay for shipping. Maybe some one close by will be willing to do that.

Good Luck!

Welcome!

I might know someone that could find some space in an incubator.....

...Going to hang up chick pics in the coops...play recordings of chicks cheeping and broodies bucbucbucbucking and screeching...and give the "you NEED to be a mommy!!" pep talk. I think it should work on the silkies and silky cross don't you?...
