6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Where did you order them from? The last I saw it was like $50 shipping and handling! I have fertilized eggs too if you want some! I just dont have an incubator and my broody hen just hatched her chick this morning.

I ordered them from Michigan, that was the closest I could find! It would be fun to get eggs from you, then I could officially join the hatch a long. Do you want more chicks? I would be happy to hatch them for you.

I ordered some eggs, and I'm wondering if they should have a heat pack shipped with them. The temp is supposed to get about 28F on the shipping days. Has anyone ever ordered eggs in the winter and have them freeze during shipping? Thanks!

The heat pack can cause problems--start incubation of some eggs at the wrong temperature.

Will the eggs go by truck or air.

6/6 eggs hatched from my broody (that quit; eggs went into bator) hatched!! LOL...I have loads of pics....

Those are so cute I can hardly stand it! My hubby just caught me looking at your pics and scowled at me and said, "I'm telling you right now, if anything pops out of those eggs with a beak instead of a bill, we're going to have problems." (Talking about the ~40 eggs we have in the bators right now)

I haven't had problems hatching shipped eggs this time of year in below freezing temperatures the past 3 years. I agree with Ron, no heat pack.

They are coming from California, so I assume air?

Thank you both. I think I'll just rely on the packing material to be enough insulation. I wasn't worried about it until I recently found a frozen egg that had sat outside all night.

The eggs will not freeze in California. They will go ariborne express to the airport and then to the local service center. From there they go out to your post office.

The likely place to get cold would be near you and only if in a truck left outside. 28 is not that much below freezing so it would take a long time for the eggs to freeze. They would likely not freeze enough to break the shell, so they will hatch fine.

The embryo is not hurt by freezing--The egg shell cracking will hurt it but you can often seal up any cracks.

Hopefully the eggs will be well packed and you will get them to you in good shape.

Keep us updated!

You are right those are Orpingtons and there is 2- different roosters. I really like both of them but the top pictures, he is a little better rooster. I have the better hens with him too. I will post pic's as they start popping out.

Day 4 of egg collecting. I got 7 today!!! Making that a total of 21. I might have started to early as I only wanted to hatch 2 dozen or so. At this point I'd say maybe 3 dozen or so lol. I usually only get around 50% hatch rate. (Based on my last 3 tries)
