Do I need to use a bleach or iodine solution or can I just use warm water? I know that using the bleach or iodine will kill bacteria but I'm afraid of getting the ratio wrong and killing the babies. What about peroxide?

Weak bleach or warm water and a bit of dawn in it would be fine.

You do not need to put oil on the eggs. Wash gently enough and the bloom will not be removed.

Anyone care set a few extra eggs for me?? Lol as it turns out, I probly won't be able to do a NYD HAL this year :'( I'm really bummed out about it. I had made a homemade incubator, but when I went to warm it up& test for a couple days, there was not enough heat put off in order to do a hatch. You know that one thing that you think is gonna work and that you really want to work, but it doesn't... that feeling... yeah, I'm feeling that right now. So if anyone would set a few eggs in my name, I'd greatly appreciate it. And try to keep me up to date on what happens when and what to do and NOT to do. Never hatched eggs out before and would greatly appreciate any info that I could use in the future when I am able to incubate some eggs. Also, anyone know/ have a good still air incubator design that I could use to build my own?? Thanks for everything in advance and I love BYC!!!

For the "Guess how many eggs?" contest where do we go to post the number of eggs the participants actually set? Is there a chart somewhere that we log into on Thursday? The only place I see for logging eggs doesn't require it until Jan the 3rd (unless I misread....which is a distinct possibility), which makes announcing a winner by Friday a unique challenge. (Hennible, where's that time machine?)

Send me the total eggs set via pm. I will ask members that do not pm me so that I can get a total. It will be used for the hatch rate contest too.

But the question is/was how does anybody know who set how many eggs? Where do we submit *that* information? Is that the stuff that's done via photograph? (which I thought was for a whole 'nother contest)

Photograph is for the chicks hatched later. I need to keep the number set secret for the total set contest.

Well, I've finally caught up on reading everything. I've been sick and not on the computer much at all. So I fell pretty far behind. I was beginning to think I'd have nothing but my own eggs to put in the incubator. I lost an auction for 10 LOs. Then I lost another auction for 24 SFH. I was feeling pretty dispirited, but thought I'd look one more time even though I knew there wouldn't be any more ending in time. Lo and behold! There was an auction for 10 SFH that was only put on for a few hours, and from a seller I've been wanting to try out too! I made darn sure I didn't lose that one!

They shipped this morning, but the seller is in Oklahoma, so not too far from me. So hopefully they'll make it in time to be set on the 11th. Haven't counted how many of my own LO and SFH I've collected.

I put my two LO hens and the rooster I want chicks from right now in a separate breeding pen to find out once and for all exactly which eggs are theirs. They are still laying bantam sized eggs!!!

Is this normal for orpingtons who will be a year old on NYD? The eggs are also strange. The shells often have small creases or wrinkles and the insides are weird. The yolks are normal, but the white are about half gelatinous mass around the yolk and half thin and runny like water. Do you think there is any chance these could hatch, and does anyone have any ideas what would cause this?

I'll try to get pics of the shells in a bit and post them up.

I have found out nothing is normal with chicken laying habits this year. Vary much off and on. They got done molting were laying like mad 16 to 20 eggs a day got 2 today. the weather I guess

I've never incubated eggs before, and only set eggs under a broody once, but I'm going to join in and give it a shot.

I just got a notice that me eggs will be shipped tomorrow too!

I will be setting late but that is fine!

Mine are on the way..I just may get one batch tomorrow..the other two the next day...wondering if I can hold on to set the early ones. You have to wonder how long ago they were collected. I know they say .. just collected..have to hope so. As long as they aren't 10 days out, I'm fine. Remember what happened at Easter last yr? Got some waaay late, like a week out! I had a great hatch! Just later in the hatch a long.

I would still need a vehicle to go fetch the eggs.

Ordered the premire one brooder last night. Anyone have it? Love it? Ive heard some people have heat problems with it. I ordred it bc i mostly hatch chicks with q broody and do about two bator hatches a year so i wont need it too frequently

I have found some RIR eggs to set! Even on Craig's list it was hard finding eggs this time. Of course if you wanted to have a war fortune sunk up they are everywhere for sale.

I get to candle the duck eggs that I set last week tonight. Hopefully everything is going well with those. Otherwise I may already be in the running for worst hatch.
