6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I've been told to use nail polish before... Never tried it though. I've read about using paraffin wax to seal the hole after you make the little hole to color your chicks... Anybody ever done that at day 19 or earlier you poke a little hole and then inject some food colouring to dye the chicks feathers...

I am joining in. My Golden Cuckoo Marans pullets came through for me (those will go into the incubator) and one of my Silkies went broody, so she is getting some Silkie eggs to hatch.

Congrats!!

Ours came from Tractor Supply but I don't know where they get them from.

SHHHH!!!! PM ronnott1 with how many you've set. There's a "Guess total eggs set" contest going on too. And if you've had your eggs delivered, let him know what city and state they came from and the city and state you are in for the "Longest egg delivery" contest.

Oh and by the way...WELCOME TO THE HAL!!!!
I think different TSC's get them from different places. Ours uses Privett. Your RIR are lighter because they haven't been bred to the standard. Commercial hatcheries pretty much breed for quantity not quality. I am sure yours are delightful though. If you like the breed I suggest getting them from a heritage breeder next time. You will be thrilled with those.

Still no word on my eggs

I have 5 slow pokes still in the incubator, taking their sweet time! So we might set a bit later in the day. Maybe I will find more fresh eggs in the barn to add :).

I found 2 of the RIR eggs are cracked. I put a cost of fingernail polish over just that area. I wonder if that ever works

I don't know about the nail polish, but I read that a bit of paraffin wax works.

Nail polish works. I've hatched several sealed with nail polish. The key is sealing the crack as soon as possible to prevent bacteria from getting in & moisture from getting out.

Like I said, set one batch today, will set the little silkie/sizzle mix tonight. Hopefully, will be setting some tomorrow night! Glad I have a couple of bators to work with. I have some in that will be hatching on the 23rd!

You guys are so tempting with all the eggs your setting. I know I shouldn't hatch but I have that itch reading this thread lol. I have a few Silkie eggs and I so want to take all my Cream Legbar eggs out of the refrigerator and set those too lol. Agh I shouldn't hatch in winter. I told my kids and they said whats the problem just set the eggs. They were a real big help.

Ha! Love it..little enablers them!
