6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Set my eggs last night (this morning?) at midnight. My daughter (27 yo) and I are excited to see how many will hatch, and what exactly they will look like. My wife, however, still hates me for hatching more eggs -

- But then again, she does like chicken soup!

How great is that?

My eggses arrived! Box looked good except for one small puncture hole on the side. I won an auction for 10 eggs and received 14! All are intact, no breakage and no cracks. 10 of them have jiggly air cells, but they don't appear to be fully detached. 4 have detached, rolling air cells. But the air cells are small, not huge like a lot of shipped ones I've gotten. I think I'm going to let them settle until this evening and then set them along with my home eggs and not turn them tomorrow. I'll check them tomorrow evening and see how the cells are looking.

This is after I removed the top layer of newspaper and opened the first egg.

All of them lined up and beautiful.

Some of the babies from my test run.

One of the flowers I hatched from my breeding pair. All but one are colored just like dad was when he was a wee babe. The one is colored like mom, but without the white chest she had. Can't wait to see how they feather out!

Looking good!

That is quite a handsome pair you've got there!

Oh no.

I hope they get there soon, all safe and sound.

That is such a wonderful thing for them to do. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Thanks Aphrael, I am lucky to have them. I have never seen better looking anywhere myself. Howard is from Texas and only has half his spurs yet but is very sensible and wise.
He screams and screams during hawk attacks to alert me but has the sense to not engage in battle with them. Rosa was a hard case and it took him a month to woo her enough to get me some fertile eggs. Just in time for this New Year Hatch.

Any bright ideas for candling bantam eggs... You see I use a TP roll attached to a flash light... It's way to big ( yes I love TP rolls apparently )
I put my hand over the end of a dollar store flashlight. It's probably the cheapest candler there is, other than an actual candle, lol. XD

ok!! it's noon I am setting my eggs into the bator NOW :D I candled em against a grow light and all the shells look perfect no cracks ect......(btw should I see the air sac now?? or will that be when I candle it in a few days....maybe because I am just holding em to the light niot focusing the light ?) anyways brb putting em in the bator now :)

OK - it's noon on 12/11 and the incubator is set! I set 10 Marans eggs (Black Copper and Blue Copper), 'cause everyone else is molting and not laying right now. Here we go!!

Advice needed...I got my HAL eggs finally about 40 min ago.

one Aircell was all over the place...completely detached so I fed it to the girls in their oatmeal...it was #8 and she can't fit it anyway. one is saddle but firmly where it supposed to be one looks perfect, the rest are either not visible or just a little wobbly. I am supposed to set them now for the HAL but am warming them up. Should I give them 24 hours for the air cells? I think they were all laid on Sunday or Monday.

Live chicks are more important than HAL contests. This is a broody hatch so no egg cartons will be tolerated by the mother to be.
