6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

There is some chirping! So excited and freaked too as I thought I had till Monday to set up their brooder! LOL This is such a busy weekend!

They internally pip and a day or so later externally pip. Then they can sit there for a bit more than 24 hours.

Chirping is a sign of life though!

The just hatched chicks need to fluff up after they hatch and can stay in the incubator for 24 hours or so...But yes, get the brooder ready. You may have one hatch tomorrow.

? About candling, I have my first batch in from the 4th. So tonight we looked at them and 4 were light, 9 were dark and either moving and or had veins. One was bouncing around like crazy! What does that mean? Also should I toss those 4 plain eggs?

I just hatched a cross with crests and fluffy feet that *should* give me green eggs. Bantam Cochin over Crested Cream Legbar. They are 5 weeks old
So cute! I was wondering whether bantams could be crossed with a standard sized. I would have thought their difference size would prevent them. Your Cochin must be a very determined little roo!

That is up to you if the do not stink.

If you pull them, open them up though. That is my rule: Always open the eggs. That way you will know what is going on better when you candle. Also, look at the embryo to see if it ever developed.

My first time hatching I somehow counted the days wrong, (you'd think I'd be able to count to 21! Nope!) and the chicks hatched 2 days before I thought they would. When I put them in for lock-down, they only had one day to position themselves to hatch, instead of 4 days. I also discovered, (at least in this case), the darker the eggs took longer to hatch. That could also just be breed characteristics, though.

I would think crack them open outside cuz they probly stink stink stink?

At 9 days old they are not usually bad or stinky. Smell them first though and if they smell bad either do not open them or open them while they are inside a zip lock bag.
