6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Oh, :(.. I'm so sorry. Yes, a few of us have lost favorite ones to critters. It's never easy when we are loving our chickens as pets.

I suppose it isn't easy for those that are having them for nutrition too..which I do..just for the eggs though.
Thanks! :) I knew it was bound to happen at some point, but this was the first to predators. This is my first time owning chickens, and I've only had them for about 6 months.

Good morning everyone!!!!

Okay, so here's how the temps are shaping up so far in the 'bator:

So the swings between 102 and 97 are actually working themselves out nicely. Since this is a LG still air, my temps are within safe range, right?
My temps, in an LG still air as well, are almost exactly the same as yours. So I hope this is a good safe range...

I have found that if my Ameraucana are developing the line between the air cell and the fluid will become very sharp and clearly defined. Eggs that are not developing will 'glow' when you put the flashlight on them. I'm with you..I can NOT see through those Ameraucana eggs either. Cream Legbar are like a clear window when you candle them, but the Ameraucana are as dense as the Marans!

A racoon or something got to one of my Polish frizzle pullets last night.

I was out until after 10:30 pm and the coop door was still open. I'm so sad. I hatched her from my first attempt at incubating. She was my sweetie! She would run over so I could pick her up for hugs.

I know that this sort of thing happens when you own chickens, but it was my fault for not closing the door before I left. I'm sorry, I don't mean to be a bummer. I'm still super stoked about the hatch. And probably the Easter hatch too.

It seems like when you really like one a favorite thats the one they kill. My darn chihuahuas killed my wheaten marans hen yesterday. I was so mad. She got in their yard.
They all got a spanking little good it will do.

Oh good. My temps are similar. I have 101-102 at the top of the eggs and 97-98 at the bottom. It sometimes gets to 103 at the top, but I think that is okay for a still air, is that correct?
