There have been some studies and Brinsea has added it to their advance incubators as an option.

From day 8 to 18, the eggs are cooled down. The studies showed that two hours were ideal. If you have a regular incubator, you turn it off for two hours while you do chicken chores.

Of course the benefit is lost if you forget to turn it back on...

The cool down cycle will make the chicks stronger that hatch and will get you one more chick per hatch usually.

Thank you!! I had asked about this a while back but it got lost and I'm too lazy to find/quote it.. LOL. I'm going to start this today. It will be a first for me doing this.

I think I asked you before..what town..my son is home now...Whoot!  After 2 yrs..he's home for Christmas!!   :)   Last place he was in was Sandy Springs..but he was in Acworth for a while, and Americus, and Dallas.

I live in Cochran, it is about 40 miles south of Macon. It's a small town . We have a small farm here and love it.

Good Morning Everyone! Got a busy day here. Get DH off to work then give all chickens scratch and check feed and water. Have to be in Athens for Dr. appt. at 10 then shop with daughter a bit. After shopping head home and check on chickens listen to them fuss (because I've been gone) while I clean the coops. Next fix dinner then sit down and see how many posts I have missed on here. Not too many I hope. I will try to check posts from phone when possible today. Y'all have a Great Day!

I was asked a favor . I am needing a lavender Orpington hen or pullet. Prefer a pullet that is laying. Must be willing to ship. Please message me with details. Thanks

Here is my red neck candler! The flashlight came from Home Depot it has 900 lumens. I took a can of green beans and cut the top off, feed the beans to the chickens, and cut a 1 1/2" hole in top with a circle cut drill bit. The egg sits perfectly in the hole. It works great.

ETA: please pardon my mess in my junk room. My DW saw me posting the picture and did I should be ashamed. I was like why it's my junk and I'm proud of it lol. She was still not pleased

Okay 11 clear eggs and 1 blood ring out of the bator. So 20 eggs still in the running with 3 = " ? " 1 being a cracked one that was repaired.

Now for the hatch rate (not for HAL contest), do we throw out the clear eggs and count what hatches out of fertile eggs (for our own records) ? I think for contest it's based on how many set to how many hatches.
My feelings are, if it goes in the incubator, it counts toward hatch rate. If you think about it, you can use this data for better flock management. For instance. you have 2 flocks of birds. Rooster 1 is in flock 1 and has 15 hens. Rooster 2 is in flock 2 and has 15 hens.
You take 12 eggs from each flock and mark them accordingly. On day 7, you candle and find that flock 1 only has 8 fertile eggs and flock 2 has 15. You now know not to use rooster 1 for breeding purposes as he is not as active in reproduction, therefore his offspring may not be either.
Furthermore, as a book keeper, it was drilled into my head that once it's in the records, do not alter it! It keeps record keeping concise. If you change the records, then you will not get the full accurate reading of the results.

Good night..sleep tight..are you candling tomorrow?
Don't you mean good night...sleep tight...dream of candling tonight? lol

@bamadude
Will that flashlight be able to candle a full can of green beans? That would be great for when my 3 yo grandson decides to go into the pantry and play "mystery can" by peeling off all of the labels.!!!
