6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Today is the first day that day light hours will start going up in the Northern hemisphere so one of my Pita Pinta pullets decided to celebrate by laying her first egg!

The first egg is from an OE hen, an EE x Marans. The second is from an Arkansas Blue and the littlest on the right is from the Pita Pinta pullet.

Very nice eggs! And what a great way for your girls to celebrate the longer days ahead of us and push those dark days behind us. Congrats!

The adults lay large to Xlarge eggs. They are a nice light brown color.

I expect her next egg will be much bigger.

Nice! So when I win the best hatch rate

I'll know what to expect!!!

I'm debating on what I want to do for the Easter HAL. I have a couple of scenerios and much depends on how this current HAL goes. But crazy how addicting this is...

What did you decide on for Easter?

It is soooo addictive, isn't it? And BYC people are such enablers!

I'm getting Black Copper Marans and (hopefully) Araucana. I wanted Araucana this time but only got 2 eggs, and I think one of those is a non-starter. If I can't get Araucana, I'm hoping for Brahma or D'uccle.

Where did you acquire the Araucana eggs? I would love some if they weren't expensive.

I got them from @simonerol, who had them for $25 for a dozen earlier this year, but when I ordered them, they weren't laying, so I only got 2, along with a Hen's choice assortment, including Isbar/OE, Brabanter, and Silkie.

Well, I noticed the "only 10 more days" announcement a few pages back and realized I had better get busy candling!!!

It turns out my mother has never candled eggs! *gasp* So I bundled them up and hauled them to her house (she lives in the basement apartment of my house, lol)... and she was quite impressed! She even got to see one move. :)

Annnnnd.... 6 of 6 seem to be doing great!
Except that the aircells aren't growing much... time to decrease humidity.
