Well temp spikes killed my hatch just checked all of them. Also found out my digital started reading wrong as well. No more digital crap for me have 2 oral thermometers I'll use from now on

Three out, no more pips at the moment. The hatched trio are healthy, happy, and peeping in the brooder.

Here's to hoping we have some late-comers to the party!

Good morning all and happy New year! I'm having so much fun looking at all the new chicks. Congrats everyone!!
I'm sad to report I have no chicks...no noise. I'm pretty sure the two from home where not fertilized...no development and the other 8 must have just traveled too far.

Water should be added for lockdown. I have read that the humidity at the end will help the shell soften up. The chicks will hatch better with less stuck chicks. The hatch should be fine but it could be better.

Unfortunately, he was so active, he stepped on it and pulled out his intestine. I culled him just now. So disappointed in myself. I should have researched that before doing chores.

So sorry! We always learn. If the piece looks like it can be cut off, cut it off. Like you found out, the intestines can be pulled out so it cannot be pulled.

For situations with yolk still needing to absorb, put them into a tea cup that they cannot get out of until the yolk is absorbed.

Use vet wrap, pipe cleaners or something to splint the legs. It does not sound like a slipped hock which is something to cull for.

I could splint it but it would still point to the left.

If to the front was 12 o'clock the right leg points to about 8:30. It looks like the problem is at the hip. I'm afraid I'll have to cull it.

Don't cull it. I've had a lot like this in past yrs. Some may call me crazy, but, I just cut it off as close I can, then apply Neosporin on it. Sometimes the extra absorbs, sometimes not. Most of the time though, the chick is fine. Is it peeping and crawling/walking around?

Wish I had known sooner. I had wondered about tying string or floss and then cutting it. I used to foal out mares for a living and we clamped the navel and cut the cords. But then, a chick isn't a colt and this is new territory for me.

Mille fleur d'Uccles. And tho batch is pretty much all sold already. I have another full round already started for mid-Jan hatch.

Any thermometer needs to be calibrated. Cheap thermometers from walmart are not accurate enough. The Brinsea spot check is the best and cost is less then shipping on most hatching eggs.

It is amazing what a little bit of blood will do to an incubator.

If the chicks were from your flock, check into some of the flock health tips. If the were shipped, sadly that just happens sometimes. Do you have nutridrench or poly vi sol without iron for the wry neck chick?

They are from my flock. They are all pullets from 2 different places, hatched in April and May of 2014.

I don't have any poly vi sol or nutridrench and we have freezing rain here. I'm trying some kelp. I've had good luck with it with some turkey poults, so I thought it probably couldn't hurt. I'll stock up on the others for the next hatch. I'm learning, but slowly.

Little bugger was in a container. A tall measuring cup. He was so tiny, but he kept getting out.
