6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Here are the chicks from the NYD Hatch-a-Long. 6 Golden Cuckoo Marans and 3 Silkies for a 100% incubator hatch.

Zero Silkie eggs hatched from under the Broody.

How do you get them to stand there while you take pictures? This boggles my mind. If I set mine down, they are running every which way.

She can't be with the others until she is able to walk around, upright.  They will peck on her.  She still looks sleepy.  When she is bright and alert, she should be able  to walk around better, even with type of bandaging for the splayed legs.

Do you think I should put mine inside a cup as well? ..

I now have 9 Trader Joes eggs out--with one more pip!

Still day 21 too so there may be more.

The TJ's chicks have spots on them, so they must be California Whites.

I may have to give those Trader Joe's eggs a try if they have California Whites! I wonder if different areas of the country have different suppliers.

Good luck with the rest!!

I've created a monster in just 3 days. Chickie can now straighten his (they are all he's so I'm not disappointed when they end up being she's) neck for short periods of time. He can eat solid food with just a little help and pecks drops of water from the eye dropper. Today I found him out of his container and standing in his box, although he had to have support from the container. But- he throws a complete hissy fit when he wants scratched. He throws himself back and over (he can now get up most times when he falls on his back), he screams and thrashes around. As soon as I start rubbing around his head and neck, he calms down, closes his eyes and twists this way and that so I get all the itchy spots. Anyone need a special needs, spoiled little chick? I had an over achiever today.
I do believe that third or fourth pic could win cutest chick!

That chick appears to be a "star gazer" (Thiamine deficiency) and will need vitamin B12 supplements. I had one like that and gave her liquid vitamin B12 (a few drops a day) from the pharmacy, scrambled egg, polyvisol (baby vitamins without iron from the grocery store) yeast and oatmeal. Took 4 days before she starting acting normal.

Hope your chick gets better.

On this Trader Joe's thing...I just found out, that the store I thought was going to be a Trader Joes..isn't.

It's a Tractor Supply..does anyone know if they have fertile eggs in that store? Seems like I heard that they do.
I found this on the internet
Trader Joe's

634 East 400 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84102
(801) 359-2462

Not sure if there really is a Trader Joe's at that address or in if it's in your area.

Thanks! I was beginning to wonder if it was really wry neck, as it doesn't seem to fit the description. He did have some egg today. I'll try the B12 and oatmeal. I tried to find Poly Vi Sol, but no one had it without iron. No Nutridrench either. That's the problem with small towns.

Our numbers are as follows...
50 eggs set
15 removed at 7 days after the first candle
3 more removed at day 14
3 more removed at day 18
Leaving 29 eggs remaining for lock down
27 hatched with 2 unresponsive eggs remaining.
We lost 1 at hatching, and had a casualty in the brooder this morning.
25 chicks remain, with pics to be posted Monday.
