Day 22 and my Blue Copper Marans egg is right now actively zipping!

YAY!! Finally a marans!

Looks like a black copper.

Final egg tally:

41 set; 3 hatched 7.3% hatch rate

A big Thank You, Ron! for hosting this event. It was fun and educational....

And I'm sorry if I put the mixed-breed-from-pure-eggs scare into anybody. But it just goes to show that anything, and especially the unexpected, can happen.

Coangrats on the Marans!

Sorry the hatch rate was so low but at least there is no little lone chick in the brooder.

Didn't the somebody post on here that they did the float test and the egg sunk like a rock but hatched anyway?  So how accurate can the float test be?

I posted that. Yeah the egg that sank did hatch, but I did the test before lockdown. So, day 18. At that time the air cell was still way undersized. I also didn't leave it in the water very long to wait to see if there was wiggling.
edit: as for accuracy, I wouldn't trust it 100% , unless you see movement! I like to do it for fun to watch the eggs move.

I had 3 hatch out of 12 but there may be a late bloomer.
I set 10 a day late and added 2 more the next day. I'm going to check them today.

I didn't do the best job of turning and temps went haywire. I never got around to retooling the cabinet so had to use a LG.

one fully zipped and died.

I just might have to add some white egg layers too!

Makes the egg basket pretty!
I can highly recommend 3 white egg breeds. Jaerhon, Minorca and Ancona.

Sry been busy & haven't caught back up yet but 1 lonely chick from my 24 set.
A mirror and a feather duster.

I just wonder if he has a real life.

I have four australorps out and one more has a pip. Much better than I thought I would have when my DW called and said the bottom of the box was soggy....

Three of them are blue!
the white fanny on the black one is hysterical!

Last 2 pips just hatched; a red orp and the last bantam. I'm 8 for 8 on the bantams set

I'm so stoked because 7 were pullet eggs from my silkie/cochin who had just started laying. She decided yesterday to go full on broody on me (she had been playing at it for the last week) and is now sitting on rocks (yes rocks, I couldn't find my golf balls) I guess if she sticks I'll have to give her some of the eggs I've been saving to set after this hatch.

Anyone have experience hatching orps? Do they hatch slow? The last 3 havn't pipped. I'm going to give the new hatchs time to dry out and then candle but any info would be great.
Yay!!! If you have extras of anything mottled and/or frizzled and female...

Many people say Marans take longer to hatch.

In my experience Marans eggs hatch on a normal frame of time, 20-22 days.
The egg that hatched a day early for me was a Wheaten Marans but I have heard that about them too.

Here are the chicks from the NYD Hatch-a-Long. 6 Golden Cuckoo Marans and 3 Silkies for a 100% incubator hatch.

Zero Silkie eggs hatched from under the Broody.

Beautiful!

The TJ's chicks have spots on them, so they must be California Whites.

Yay for CA Whites! Happy you will be able to add the white layers and remember me when you are wondering what to do with your extra pullets.
I like the Mediterranean breeds so it would not matter. The CA whites are calmer according to the description but I already have some very flighty breeds--Penedesenca and the Arkansas Blues think I am going to kill them when I toss treats to them.

I love them though.

I love the idea that I will be able to get chicken dinner and eggs from $2.99 a dozen store eggs!

One more egg is zipping and there is one more with a pip. Not bad since it is barely 12 hours since they started to hatch. I have 8 of 17 it looks like so far. I set 24 too!

Looking forward to seeing the final pics!
