I look at the little curled up marans that hatched this morning and compare to the other two chicks and, you know, it's quite obvious something ain't right with it. I've started the B-vitamins and Poly Vi Sol and even did the splayed-leg-chick bondage outfit as the legs never quite get into standing position++. But looking at the chick's demeanor and expression and I'm wondering if there's some severe neurological damage that happened. I mean -- and I cannot express this without sounding un-PC -- I think the little thing is mentally retarded or brain damaged. The light just isn't there in the eyes. It just flops around the incubator and has absolutely no coordination. If placed in the brooder it would no doubt flop and drown. I'll continue with the treatments for a while longer (a couple of days) as I do believe in rooting for the underdog and see if it "chicks up" and has some functionability, but WOW. Seems so tragic. I wonder if the thickness and coloring on the marans shell inhibits oxygen penetration?
++ In describing the position of the legs, in a normal chick facing to the left the legs are under it at six o'clock. This chick's feet are placing more to nine and ten o'clock. It's like it cannot get out of the curled up in the egg (fetal) position.
Yesterday's chick by this hour of development was pecking at stuff and following around after its 3-day older sibling like an adoring little sister toddler. (They're actually now about the same size)

On a happier note: I candled the TJ's eggs set last Sunday and pulled 3 of them (1 clear / 2 blood ring), leaving 32 with great healthy veins. Best of all, with the white shells I could candle in broad daylight and didn't have to take the eggs out of the tray. Loving that!
