6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

So this is scientific? I'm not meaning to be cynical, just curious.

Also, for the spreadsheet suite, I know that @ronott1 described this but I'm trying to set up the "Start collecting eggs..." portion of the incubation station sheet so, what is the optimal time to start gathering eggs for a new set? I'm thinking 7 days was the optimal but that could have been my own personal interpretation.
About the chicks needing a buddy, our daughter had hatched out about 18 white Silkie chicks and only wanted to keep one so she sold the others. When the others were taken away that chick pitched a fit. I told her what I had heard about using a mirror so she put one in the brooder with the chick and he stopped pitching a fit and started acting like there was another chick with him. She was hatching other Silkie eggs so when they hatched she put the new chicks in with him and removed the mirror.

Shipped eggs should be collected for five days. Shipping stress is a factor with them.

Eggs that are not shipped can be collected for ten to fifteen days. The older eggs will still hatch but hatch rates will be lower.

You can still hatch eggs that are older but they might do better with the cold storage method I confused everyone with early in the hatch a long.

Ah, okay. So I'd say that's somewhat scientific. Thanks.

So;

  1. If eggs are shipped, suggested collection time (prior to shipping, I presume) is 5 days.
  2. If eggs are NOT shipped, collection can be up to 15 days without cold storage, but 10 days would be optimal?

Here's the reason I'm asking:

The Incubation Station worksheet will;
  1. Alert you when it's time to start collecting the eggs
  2. How long until set date
  3. How long until hatch date

So, it would definitely need to know if the eggs are shipped or gathered locally to determine when ordering or collecting should begin.

Here's Oops and Solo, the only 2 out of 41

It is A LOT more quieter in the house now that the second chick is here, although on occasion Solo still sounds off with the alarm peeps. (Probably a roo)

My first chick hatched last night!!! He is so cute and vent sexed as a male. 5 more eggs need to hatch, i assisted the first guy because he was more developed but he was shrink wrapped bad. i think it was because he had a very porous egg shell. Humidity has stayed almost constant at 55-70%. Today is day 23(24 really but two power outages put them behind).

Shrink wrap is usually from wet chicks. It happens a lot with late hatches because of low average temperatures during incubation.
